Hi all,
I fitted an oil pressure gauge to my 1G, and i was shocked at the oil pressure readings i was getting. I was shocked because i'm comparing the readings to my Evo, which is completely different. Can someone please confirm if these readings are healthy for a 1G.
Cold start idle: 80psi
Hot idle: 15psi
Full throttle: 50-60psi
3000rpm cruising: 30-40psi
I'm using a 15w-40 semi synthetic oil
cheers all,
Kris

thats fine,
Your getting good pressure there when cold start up, dropping to about 15 psi at idle when hot is fine, your useing good oil, pressure drops seem about spot on!
The important thing for you do do with these is to make sure that they dont go to low when up the revs under full load on boost, keep an close eye on it all the time, your pressure should drop down from 50-60 at full throttle and then to maybe even less when engine oil temp is very hot, maybe 30-40 in those circumstances is ok right up the revs but not going any lower than this.

I have the Japanese manual and while I cant read it, it does suggests the following at operating temp (80-90degC):
0.4kg/cm^2 at I assume idle (5.7psi)
4.2kg/cm^2 at 5000rpm (59.7psi)
What pressure does your EVO show?
But as James mentions, as long as it doesnt drop when under high load then it looks fine.
That's probably an optimistic gauge, or you are flirting with a broken pump or burst filter in its future. Cold or hot or both? Has someone stretched/shimmed the relief valve spring in hopes of doing good for the engine?
The 1G is fine, not great but fine and has many miles/kilometers of life in it.
'I've scrapped better.' John stated when asked about the car by the guy with the silver tipped cowboy boots!
The reason why he is asking is that it is a brand new rebuild motor, that's why he is worried about it. It also has a knock noise on startup aswell. Not sure for how long kris could probably explain that alittle more.
lol it's a Defi gauge, don't stress about the evo, the high oil pressure is normal in a 4G63T.
As mentioned my 1G has had a "freshen up" 6 months ago (using standard pistons with new rings, bearings and gaskets) and it has developed a loud knock for the first 3-4 seconds of cold start up. this is why i fitted the oil pressure gauge.
My low K 1g-gte has a knocking noise too on the first few seconds of startup, accompanied with the low oil pressure light staying on for 2-3 seconds.
Mine sounds like it's from the head, but from being in the car I can't judge, will start it up next time and see.
Have also tried 3 different oil filters even Toyota genuine and it still makes the noise with light coming on for few seconds.
I'm wondering if it's not a problem with the oil filter what could be causing this, only happens when car is cold.

theres heaps of different possibliltes as to why this is happening thats your loud tap bang noise on startup, it will not be your filter unless its completely blocked which i highly doubt.
When you start your engine and its cold of course, it has to build up pressure to get the oil circulating from the oil pump pickup, there will be a few seconds or so before your light goes out this is normal behavior and nothing to worry about. Its just getting the pressure signal at that moment and then you have normal oil pressure build up the we light turns off and she is alive
This will have nothing to do with the noise.
If your motor has done high kms then you can expect this noise to happen it could be worn lifters, worn big end bearings. Keep an eye on your oil pressure when cold is it high??

if its a built botom end and it has oversized pistons, its probably a light bit of piston slap till thermal expansion kicks in. i have seen it on so many built motors.
when people fit oversized pisons the buy a kit (20'thou, etc)
but even tho there for a 20 tho overbore, not all the pistons are dead on 20 tho, they can be a small amount bigger or smaller, if you get an engine built, the piston should be labeled and the bore machined for that exact piston and the rings should be gapped accordingly also.

Hi,
But the thing is I only get the noise on the first 3 seconds of startup when its cold, otherwise no noises while driving. The oil pressure light never comes on when driving cold or hot.
Motor has done 67,000km.
