How much lift have the Tomei cams got ?? I am using the TRD springs with standard
everything on 8.5/8.35mm lift 272/268mm duration cams, and believe they are good to
around 9.0mm. From memory, I could not get 60 thou (inch) clearance on stock springs
with the 8,35mm lift cam i.e. the spring bound solid.

Stock springs would certainly work with 8.1mm lift cams. However, for peace of mind,
I would look at investing in a new set if the originals had 200,000km on them.

These (PON) Cams are advertised as "Plug&Play" and according to specs the standard springs should have been OK but @ your situation, the Reconditioner also couldn't get 60 thou (inch) clearance on the stock springs with these Cams; with the springs binding.

Specs for TOMEI (PON) Cams are as follows; < specs for others on their website: The TOMEI Official Web Site

    Duration: 264.
Max Cam Lift: 8.15mm IN / EX
Max Valve Lift: 7.90 IN / 7.85 EX
Cold valve Clearance: 0.20 IN / 0.25 EX
Lobe Ctr Angle (initial): 106 IN / 110 EX
    Base Circle Dia.: 28

Thumbs up Re: TOMEI 264 PON CAMS for 4AGE; Valve Springs

Interesting. There could be some small difference in clearances between the bigport
and smallport heads (mine is a smallport). I used Colt C.709S cams with 8.28mm lift
and had no issues with stock springs. The colt cams were developed as a "drop-in"
for the bigport with stock everything.

60 thou (inch) is just over 1.5mm, so I´m picking some people have run with less
clearance. For sure I never checked the clearance when I dropped the Colt cams
into my engine... never even checked the shims Only got round to being scientific
when I went to the bigger cams.

I´d go with the TRD springs for peace of mind.

Why is anyone in NSW talking about .060in??? Old farts???? Experience must be with old Detroit shit, not a spring half, or less, their size like a 16V.
Also, with 5-6? coils, that would be .300-.360in/7.62-9.144mm lift before binding. Gross excess.

Hmmmm, the TRD springs I chose were measured to be able to take lifts in excess of .400" (10+mm)

from memory... seat pressures were 50#s on seat, and about 135#s @ .400"

Toda Springs are good to 10.5mm lift

    Gross excess.
That´s maximum cam lift plus 60 thou (total) without coil binding.

Stock springs are good for 8.5mm of lift. Its the shims that cause the issues. In the early days HKS made their cams with 8.5mm of lift and were plug and play jobs. They revised this and changed their lift to 8.35mm to give that extra saftey margin.

If you cams have a lift less than 8.35mm you will have no problems running them.

Performance valve springs in Sydney or Melbourne (can't remember) make springs for the 4AGE at a very reasonable price and also allow you to run up over 9mm of lift.

These are the springs that I run.

Re. 30psi. Technically yes but its close and I guess that's why the engine builder requested I supply him with uprated springs. I purchased Performance springs as well. FWIW Toda units were just as cheap but the issue was delivery; when AUS Toda rep quoted 2-3 weeks (maybe) and then mentioned he s/times had trouble getting feedback from Japan I decided to play it safe & go local.

Thanks for the advice but apart from Filters and the odd fastener I haven't bought parts locally for 18 months; I get them ex Japan or, if the part was sold in USA; ex California; even cheaper - try USD $28 for an EFI Fuel Filter.

As for Jesse; heaps of people seem to think he's 2IC to God but we didn't click & by mutual agreement we aren't doing business again. His site says everything from Japan "faster & cheaper". I beg to differ. Apart from the 5+ weeks it took to get the item delivered, he would not quote shipping until after I'd paid for the part (even though the weight was stated in the manufacturers website) and then, surprise surprise, slugged me twice his "estimated" shipping price. If Amayama, Nengun etc can give you a total price that includes delivery up front why can't he?

Jesse's intial parts prices were cheaper than Nengun but his shipping ended up being nearly 3x Nengun's rate (what one hand giveth, the other taketh away. . ). In the end, I calculated I would've saved close to $200 if I'd gone through Nengun.

Anyone else that's used him and wants to sing his praises; knock yourselves out - but I've got the emails to back up what I'm saying.

hey man i tnk it's ur bad luck....
in the past and recently i used both Nengun and jesse but with Nengun have to wait nearly 5 weeks to get the stuff, but with jesses every thing i got with in 2 weeks;( but i highly doubted you save nearly $200 going with Nengun) not only me most of the ppl from HR or even here will approve that.

by the way i didn't try to promote Jesses or anyone; i ur post when i saw ur struggling with AUS TODA thought to point u in right direction cause I've been there.

but end of the day different ppl like diff things so go with your flow bro.

That's fair enough. If its working for you then go for it; I've got better things to do than NEG people and I realise my experience might not be that of others; I just called it as I saw it.
