hey.. reviving this thread from the dead...

    got another issue..

had the car back on the dyno today..

first run the clutch seemed to slip...

then 4 or 5 runs.. all the way to 8000rpm with no slippage..

then we upped the boost.. went for another run and it slipped again...

the clutch should have been good for well over 500hp.. but that may be beside the point..

roll the car off the dyno.. go to roll forward.. nothing.. i can get it into 1st.. but as soon as i start backing off the clutch it pops out...

i can take off in 2nd with no problem..

    SO.. any ideas??

I'm thinking synchro, then linkages/bushings, then gearbox.

Clutch already needs replacing so might as well thrash it till it fucks itself then just get a new g/box & clutch.

My vote is kill it this weekend.. then tow home by a UZ powered machine
Wish I had a F#%ken awesome toyota.. saving for the goodness now.... stay tuned....

Thats a bit silly advice when used boxes tend to command $1k and up where this box may be able to be saved, if not strengthened if not too far gone.

I would recheck the clutch through the inspection ports to make sure its engaging/disengaging properly.

As mentioned in my PM, then you are looking at something wrong with the internals and you are stuck with removing the box and opening it up to see whats damaged, my money is on either the 1st gear thrust washer (but that would affect more than just 1st) or the 1-2 selector fork (you may have only damaged one side which allows you to engage 2nd properly but not 1st). There are upgrades available for both and along with a syncro/bearing kit, it will ensure you will have a long and happy time knowing it will put up with whatever you throw at it.

Yeah im definitely going to keep the box...problem is I dont know fuck all about gearboxes..and wouldn't even know where to start rebuilding one..

If I am going to rebuild, it will definitely be strengthened..any idea on prices for synchro/bearing kits?

Yeah, rebuilding a gearbox isnt for everyone. You should be able to take the front and rear cases off and have a look for any obviously broken bits

Driftmotion sell the things you need, though shipping isnt the cheapest. I havent really looks to see where else they are available for.
Marlin Crawler Billet Shift Fork for R154 - $130US
    Marlin Crawler R154 Thrust Washer - $80US
R154 Transmission Rebuild Kit - $239US (includes all bearings, syncros and seals)
They have other things like bushes, CroMo bearing retainer along with a number of clutches and alot of OEM parts - Drivetrain

And the A70 Supra Transmission TSRM for assembly/disassembly and exploded diagrams to give you an idea of what to look for - click here (6.34MB pdf)

I pulled mine apart to fit some Marlin Crawler bits (pic is in my ride thread), just using that A70 manual, its not too difficult but you do need to be very careful when disassembling the shifter forks as there are several balls and springs that have to go back in the right spots!

As you will need a press to fit some of the MC stuff, i would just save yourself the bother and take the box to a specialist and get them to do it

yeah, that's the most likely solution.. i dont have the time or patience to deal with rebuilding a gearbox.. could prob do it myself and save cash.. but meh..

any idea on labour cost? the joint in belmont you mentioned? you know what they charge???

As i ended up doing most of the work myself i only needed them to fit the thrust bearing as you need a press to do that, so it was fuckall.. less than $100 i think

    lets see if this works

i find that dodgy looking places usually have some old experienced bloke who has been doing shit for years.. normally does a good, no fuss job...

flash looking places usually have some barely pubescent apprentice doing the work for cheap and fucking it up..
