Default Spigot Bush from hell removal : 4AGE

OK, so we all are used to packing grease in behind the bush, banging a bolt in and the spigot bush popping out - EASY right!

.....cept when the grease pushes thru the bearing and its wedged in there...

So off to Bunnings to get 1 x 12mmx60mm Dynabolt looks about like this

Remove the nut, slide the thick end into the center of ye fuxoid spigot bush, then, gently tap the metal shroud onto it as well. Put a washer on the end of the bolt and screw the nut on nice and tight ; resulting in this

a pair of multigrips for some leverage will look like this ; i managed to get a crowbar in behind it and with some swift pries it came out

    result

Hope this helps someone in their travels, I searched high and low and found the usual grease pack variety PLUS the other way of doing this is with a slide hammer also......then a brief encounter on r31skylineclub (thanks to beersandwich) netted the above.

1/2 a day to remove a spigot bush. Far out.

    dynabolt is a good idea!

I grabbed someone elses idea of using wet paper/cardboard instead of grease, cos the grease only works half the time.

wet paper is the shiz. i haven't been beaten yet. ( touch wood. ) it doesn't squeeze through an unsealed bearing like grease will and it leaves the area clean after you prise it out.
so much stuff. so little time.

Good idea using the expansion bolt. Would sort out the stubborn ones

edit : could easily combine with a sliding hammer

I picked up this same tip as Oldcorollas here.
Worked heaps better than the grease method, and faaaaaaar less messy.

You do need to ram a fair bit of paper in there, but it works quite well once you've packed enough in.

I used newspaper cos it was the easiest to work with.

the dynabolt way looks like it would work better if there is rust and crap preventing the bearing coming out.. allowing you to put more force on it (and maybe rip the middle out )
paper method is not great if the sides of the bearing have fallen to bits..

I'm planning a 4afe to 4agze engine conversion - stripping gze down at the moment for rebuild.

Is this spigot removal something I'll have to do?

no i don't believe so ; the spigot bush IIRC only exists for the RWD models the FWD don't have them although happy to stand corrected.
