    fixed.

The MSefi ECU is just as robust (or fragile) as an aftermarket unit - what it lacks is the support from dyno/performance shops in Oz as the only source of money is actual labour.

given that the ECU has been fit to all kinds of engines ranging from single-cyl motorbike to a V16 quad cam tank engine (in a mini tractor puller) - and does all kind of duty from frugal and emission-friendly daily-driver to a salt-lake speed racer and hard-core off road buggy - i think it's a big stretch to say that they fuck up easily.

Where things go wrong (like most non-factory setups) is that they require some research and planning and you have to provide the support yourself or be willing to participate in online forums.

Just like toymods, the Msefi forums have little time for people who complain that it 'dont work' yet offer nothing in the way of configuration detail and expect online folks to solve their problems for them.

Chucky, agreed... you just re-iterated and expanded on what I said... they can be fucked up easy... not they fuck up easy.

Slidin, whats wrong with the pistons you have?? Often 18RG bores are fine after half a million ks, as they are hard as, so you dont usually need to bore them out, a hone with a bottlebrush hone should be enough. Just get some chromoly rings and new bearings (new gudgeon bushes are a good idea too). For what you want, higher compression will be a big help. Otherwise, check out the tractor engine thread, as there has been recent mention of different 18RG piston suppliers/manufacturers.

No... standard stuff wont account for boost whatsoever... and is poo anyways. A modern aftermarket ECU (even a cheap one) is light years ahead of the factory 18RGUE ECU. Also you will want bigger injectors... the 1G DSM ones teh Witzl mentioned are fairly good price, and plenty big enough for what you want. PM if you want e-ghey links to what I got.

The biggest problem with the factory setup is it has no ignition control, so you have no means of attaining a boost-friendly ignition curve.

I seriously wouldn't bother with turbocharging if you're not going to install proper engine management.

The SC14 are generally quite cheap, and should be plenty big enough for getting some extra oomph outta the 18RG. Just like the turbo you need an updated ECU... but they are not as efficient as Turbos and will use more fuel (if your only going to race, this isnt much of an issue). Definitely another option.

I'm not sure I'd call it "piss easy" but it's certainly possible. I bought a SC12 and mocked it up on my 18R-G, it will fit but the piping would be fucked, everything is in the wrong place.

BLUEWIRE in adelaide has done a sc 18rg, i woudnt bother with this sc or tc idea if your not going the whole nine yards with management and doing things right the first time. ur up for the part of $5000 put a 1g in it or better yet just go 1j

18R-GTE or 18R-GZE can be inexpensive if you know what your doing and can do most of the fabrication yourself. If you cant do fabrication or wiring yourself, then 1G/1J is going to be friggin expensive anyways. So unless you either are quite handy, or have a fat wallet that needs shrinking... a conversion will likely be infeasible.

So how are your fabrication skillz??

As an update, I now have an 80% completed MS2, a CT26 twin entry, an 18R-GEU efi set, a set of 1G DSM injectors (450cc fully refurbished) sitting here waiting. Just need to wait on the motor's delivery, and will need to have some flanges fabricated, and get some piping.

Will let you all know how it goes.
