It's pissing down with rain and I can't walk across the road to get my lunch so i'm bored. I've been considering turbo options for my supra lately and as a result, have been reading up on what's available and trying to get my head around what the specifications really mean. Turbo tech 101-103 on the garret site has been very beneficial, and thus, I will use them as the "control" group for my discussion.
There is a very similar thread to this on these very forums here:
http://www.toymods.org.au/forums/showthread.php?t=31024
I have decided to create another thread because I have some alternative turbo make/model suggestions and would like some feedback.
Firstly, my goals:
400-450 rwhp. This means somewhere in between. I'm chasing no less than 400 rwhp (just because) but realise 450rwhp on a street car is ridiculous and not required, so I need no more than this. If anything, I wish to reach my desired power goal relatively "comfortably" to make the entire set up more reliable. That means not having to run much more than about 20 psi and risk detonation on crappy 98 RON
Response (the more the better). prefer full boost somewhere between 3500 and 4000 rpm. Its a street car so if its hitting full boost any later than this then it means I have to be going bloody fast to have fun. Car is also being put together for track days (nothing competitive, pure recreation) but this can also be taken into account.
Engine is a 1JZ GTE (not vvti)
Autronic SM4
HKS adjustable cam gears
Manual gear box (R154)
264 cam shafts are something that could happen in the future but arent there presently.
Turbos in question:
GT3076R - not really a candidate as ill have to push it too hard to reach my power goal but throwing it up there for comparison
GT3582R
Turbonetics GTK 550
Precision 6062
Precision 6262
Greddy T67-25G - unlikely as they rarely pop up in good used cond. and i'm not forking out the mullah that trust want for a journal bearing turbo.
Link to specifications on above turbos
^^^ click that for the specs, i'd prefer this discussion to be based on the specs, as i'm bringing some "foregin" makes/models into the mix and want to know how they compare to what Garret has to offer. So no "my mate Joe's cousin's brother made a billion kw with his 35R on a soarer" comments.
In finishing, I know the 35R is a good option. It's the easiest option and probably the cheapest. It will reach my power goal without too many headaches. However, I fear it may be a tad laggy for the street side of things. Ultimately, i'm searching for something half way between the 3076R and 3582R, and Garret dont really offer anything suitable in this range.
cheers

Wish I had a F#%ken awesome toyota.. saving for the goodness now.... stay tuned....
Garrett actually offer the 3082R.
Here is the link.

This is actually between the 3076 and the 3582r. I have personally fitted one of these to a RB25 with everything standard except rods and pistons. Exhaust manifold design was poor and it still maintained the factory intake manifold. It made 300rwkw which is 400rwhp@20psi. Excellent boost response and pulled hard all the way to redline.
MX83 Grande 1jz GT35R buildup here.

Some say that his heart has 6 cylinders. All we know, is he's called,
^^ I was almost gonna mention the 3082R however in reading the other thread that I linked, it was mentioned quite a few times in negative light as a mismatched turbo with a compressor that is too big for the turbine. the 3082R has the 60mm turbine wheel doesnt it?
1990 JZMA70 Supra SOLD
I 've got ford gt3582r on my 1jz r154.
Anything below 3000rpm is gutless but come on hard at 4500.
Due to the fact that it's 1.06 housing. You could go with 0.84 is ideal, should get you full boost at 4000rpm.
I run an ITS 60-1 and it fills all of your above. Or the other option, my ultimate turbo for a 1JZ would be a HKS 3037S Pro.
1JZ MZ20 Soarer - 4AGZE KE70 Corolla - 4AGE AE86 - 4AGE KE70
this is something ive actually been considering myself.. and your requirements are exactly as i want..
anyone had any experience with t04z's ?
im also in the same boat, will be purchasing a turbo soon, was going to run the HKS 3037s so i could still run an external gate, also they are bit cheaper than the 3037s pro.. anyone know the advantage?
If that fails was going to go with the 3076r as being a drifter response is more important than overall power...
It all depends what i can get a new HKS for, seems buying one from the USA at the moment might be the go with 2500 being the going rate. Also the rear housing was in question too, was thinking the .73
ALso what would a to4z be like for response and overall power with the .61 rear housing?
actually iv spent so much time reading about turbos for 1jz over the last 2 years im about fukin sick of it, if i cant afford the 3037s .73 rear ill be going for the 3076 with the .82 rear.. done deal
I just want V band.... possible?
DOnt mean to jack your thread dude, this info may be helpful to you also
.82 on a 3076R will be pretty good for what you need mate. it wont get to 300 rwkw i dont think but will still provided plenty of power and more importantly, response for your drifting. i'm not sure if different types of rear housings are available for the 3076R though as its probably not a spopular as the 35R so less demand. I am probably wrong though.
1990 JZMA70 Supra SOLD
Your there is three different sizes, like I say hks3037 is ultimate for me if I have enough coinprob good for you too if you got the 1.06 rear?
once you get the 3076r you will love it. got my little gizmo off gwil FCD hope to 18psi by end of the week. should be alot of fun. then its time to find a helmet off to drags
1992 - JZA70 STOCK - SOLD
3037S will be pushing too hard to reach 300rwkw. It will do it with cams and a lot of boost but I dont necessarily want a highly strung set up like that. i'd rather make 300 comfortably with the head room and sacrafice a little bit of response. I can handle full boost by 4000 RPM as i'm not using the car for drift. I think the 35R will be the go for me.
Carlo, what size rear is on your 3076R mate?
1990 JZMA70 Supra SOLD
mine is .82 not so laggy currently on 10psi and running a manual GFB apparetly swapping to a EBC will make it spooler quicker and harder.........
1992 - JZA70 STOCK - SOLD
a few people on jzx100 have (or have linked) to 3037 making 300 wkw on a 1j, which is why i bought one for my 205
