well after talking with Arias some more and also talking with dangdang on here we have come to the conclusion that the low compression ones in dangdangs engine are working fine with his oil squirters in his bottom end, and Arias have said that there high compression pistons have the same skirt length, so should be alright I am thinking.

This is the reply I got from them when I told them that there low comp pistons appear to work with the oil squirters.

well, the bottom of the pistons is almost identical, I think they would clear but I am not 100% sure... we have been making these pistons for several years now and we have not ran into any problems... someone would had said something already if the squirters were contacting the pistons...

Unsure of actual Arias part number.
Thats odd. Arias own website: http://www.ariaspistons.com/products/toyota.html only list for 88-92 MR2 and then the 20v. No mention of a 20mm gudgeon 16v piston at all. Perhaps on your next email you could enquire as to the gudgeon pin size, and part number?

Edit: if you add the item to the cart you get this part number: 3730300 which is what Arias list for the 88-92 MR2

Did the MR2 come with bluetop or redtop bigports? Redtop bigports had the 7-rib block and 20/42mm little/big ends compared to the 18/40 of the bluetops.

Can't remember whether they were blue or red, but they were AFM'd (stupid US emissions regulations.....)

I emailed them regarding the pin size and yes that part number 3730300 does suit the 20mm gudgeon pins.

    Hi Beeri,

Can you also confirm the gudgeon pin size (20mm?) for your part number 3730300 please?

if they were made for the AW11 4AGZE then they will be 20mm gudgeon. the only time you will get a piston for the 18mm pin is if the pistons were for specifically the bluetop 4AGE (84-86 in the AW11 MR2 in JDM land afaik)

In the USA... 18mm pins disappear @ the beginning of 1988.

That is the intro to the 4AGZE. The same crank and rods were used the 4AGE, as was used in the 4AGZE.

correct, same as everywhere else in the world, just japan got them a bit earlier, from 86 onwards instead of 88. Either way the result is the same, and is probably reflected in that ive never heard of oil squirter clearance issues in any 4A build

Ahh ok, previously ive never been able to get any certainish date as to the switch over for the US market. In fact the last set of pistons i ordered from CP were 18mm, despite them being for a "Smallport" according to the catalogue.

I'm putting my pistons and rods in tonight, I will measure my skirts to make sure they are the same as the hi comps, if they are then there's your answer.

I was so engrossed fitting them in the engine last night I forgot to measure the skirts I had even got my verniers out specifically for the task, apologies. But I can tell you my low comps definitely clear the squirters and their p/n is AP331669. If the high comps have a 20mm pin I'd be pretty damn confident they would be to fit the later model block with squirters. Hope this helps anyways RT40
