put the car into reverse before starting it to avoid the crunch?
 High 4AGE Cold Idle
 High 4AGE Cold Idle
i figured this probably wouldnt fit into the other idle thread, as it's on 1G's
my 4AGE cold idles up around 2000 rpm, which can sometimes make for a crunching shift into reverse
warm idle is (i assume) normal at around 1000 rpm or a little lower
any ideas on the cause/solution?

 Re: High 4AGE Cold Idle
my 4age cold idle about 1800-1900 rpm, once hot idle at 900 rpm,
you dont drive your car when its cold! wait till its warm and the revs have
dropped then put it in reverse!, and it would be a silly idea to put it in reverse
before you start it, meaning you'd have to hold your foot on the clutch whilst
it warmed up meaning your gearbox would still be cold when you start driving,
engine and gearbox need to be warmed up before driving, thats the reason you've got
a cold start injector,
5 extra mins per morning arnt going to hurt you, if you dont spare it you'll fuck your
engine and gearbox!

trust me its the best thing you could do!, your car dosent have problem's
but it will have problems if you dont warm up your engine
try it out, you'll notice your car drives better as you take off in the morning

 Re: High 4AGE Cold Idle
The best thing you can do is just to drive around gently as it warms up. There is no benefit to be gained by idling it like that. You notice the car takes off "better" because it's warm, but 2 mins of driving will achieve the same.
Your problem with high idle sounds similar to mine, and unfortunately I haven't found out the cause either. Both your cold idle and warm idle are way too high. My problem seems to be somewhat intermittent, so i'm hoping it's my leads which I'm about to replace today. You didn't mention your car was popping and farting slightly as it misses, so your problem could lie elsewhere.

1000rpm is high as well? anything significantly below that and it sounds/feels like it's about to stallOriginally Posted by JustCallMeFrank
actually, it does backfire sometimes, when i let off the accelerator. havent figured out exactly why it does that either, as it only happens sometimes. could just be the largish (2.25-2.5") tipOriginally Posted by JustCallMeFrank

 Re: High 4AGE Cold Idle
According to the spec, the manual, and from driving almost 10 SX's in varying ages (from near new through to my own recently) the cold idle is invariably around 2000rpm but should drop to around 1200 within a minute or two, and then about 800 after a couple of minutes more.

				My 4AG:
Cold start idle: ~1700rpm
Operating temp idle: ~800rpm
With regard to the crunching when you attmpt to engage reverse just hold the clutch in and wait a little bit longer (1 second or so more than you have been) and then shift into reverse. In almost any car if you slap it into reverse the instant you depress the clutch it will crunch (things in the gearbox need a short time to stop spinning).

 Re: High 4AGE Cold Idle
you know how a gearbox works right?
reverse has no synchro, so it will crunch IF they layshaft is still spinning.
to get reverse to engage without crunching.. push in the clutch and hold it in for say 5 seconds... then try and engage reverse.... if the layshaft has not slowed down enoughj, try 10 seconds.... if it still crunches, your clutch is dragging.
as for warming upm you only need oil pressure before driving off... drive gently and it'll be fine....
could be worse to leave it idling if you are a little low on oil pressure...
edit.. ffs.... you had to post seconds before meheh heh...

thing is, i usually start it in neutral, without the clutch in. would that be better or worse? i cant be bothered thinking about it atm, studying for hsc
it doesnt do it all the time either, i think its just when the idle is really high, like at least 2000 rpm
