if your main bearing caps align perfectly with the skirt of the block, then it is a simple cutting procedure.
or you need a flat plate, with protrusions to meet the caps = machine down from thicker plate

i think (?) that the SS works one above also comes with the main caps (which need to be line bored) so that they will be aligned, and are stronger than stock caps.

the design (and material) also makes a big difference.. just putting a random bit of plate there may not actually stiffen things, depending on its shape. and it depends if you are trying to stop the caps moving relative to the skirt, or the skirt from expanding tec etc

It states that the SS girdle doesn't come with the caps oldcorollas. I think $1500 is reasonable for something of this complexity which they have obviously put a lot of time and effort into designing, choosing the correct material, testing and manufacturing. It not as simple as a flat plate with holes in it. There are protrusions/recesses for the caps to meet flush as well as possibly a few other hidden bits that would need to be taken into consideration. I just honestly believe if someone was to have one custom made the cost could quite quickly blow out past $1500. For instance a custom intake plenum, a good one is at least a grand and there isn't much if any machine work in one of those, its the labour that's the killer, if someone had the skills and time plus access to the right gear maybe then it would make economical sense to build your own.

is there much of a market for people running 25-40psi boost?

is there actually a stiffness problem with the block, and will stiffening the bottom of the skirt (ie, halfway in the sump of many engines) actually help much?

Probably not as has been discussed its revs not boost that really strains the bottom end, even 30 psi at 8500 for short periods is nothing like 9000+ boost or not for extended pace. Perhaps the girdle needs discussion in a new thread..high rev 4a?

To me, the plate seems like another pricey "JDM" part for sale with little or no need. Before I spend $1500 on a plate, I'll go back to Loynings and have them shotpeen the caps, and machine me reinforcement straps for #2 and #4 mains

while I can't tell you if this works I tottaly agree about the bolt on magic JDM parts, no matter how big the compromise they seem to want to sell a kit that doesn't involve fabrication and there is some real stupid ones out there.

My dad builds alot of high reving cosworth N/A engines and Pinto 2L SOHC engines which rev anywhere from 9-10k and put out power from 200hp-300hp!. They use custom made billet caps, and they get the blocks lined bored after.
They dont use cradles or bolt on caps etc.

Do it once do it properly .

I'm not sure if they crack... or if all they do is distort a bit.... Loynings told me that once shot peened... the caps hold up to nearly the abuse that a strapped cap will hold.

this doesn't make sense to me, how would a harder surface tension stop distortion?
