Default Upgrading Alternators - Amp Ratings?

    Hi guys,

Im struggling to find info on amp outputs from various alternators. Does anyone have and hard numbers for alternators from Z30, A70, A80 or even MR2 engine variants?

    I ultimately want a 130 to 150 amp alternator on my 1J

    Cheers

I couldn't give you solid numbers but the alternator on my 1jz is off a early 90's soarer and I believe it is around 80A or maybe at a stretch 100A. I can't see the writing properly with it in the car. I don't think there is any standard alternators that do over 120A but I could be wrong.

    Good luck with the hunt

As td42gp said, 80-100 amp I think is all you will find in a N.D alt.
Some bosch ones are 120 amp .
Why do you want such a high amp alt?

EPC says the following at a quick glance...

    JZZ30 says 100A
    UZZ3x says 120A

    JZA80 GTE is 100A

    Cheers

thanks for the info guys, im running a pretty hefty high pressure fuel pump, a lifter pump, 2 big thermos and an aftermarket ignition module. I want to add a few smaller rads into my system with small thermos later on down the track and already im noticing a large voltage drop at high rpm which is causing a breakdown of my ignition system at high boost. I am contemplating rebuilding my current jza70 alternator or switching to a higher output one from a different car, im just doing the research to see if its worth rebuilding mine or getting a :bigger" one so ive got the room to play with. Also chasing some wiring that may be too small for the application, what size wire would you recommend for 30A draw? Im thinking 12 guage...

you will find higher amp alts in euro cars, probably bosch compact. like 150+A

You might want one of these? Not sure on quality but they look good

Bit of physical body size difference between UZ (JZ??) and 7M, so you'd imagine a UZ has more potential for rewinding, but 165amp is pretty hefty. Postage might hurt though

Ok so its not a battery charging concern? (alternator not keeping up at idle) as thats a fair amount of current draw at idle i would assume...

How much voltage drop are you experiencing? ...and come to think of it how or why would voltage drop at highrpm? the only thing i can think of that would draw more power at high rpm is the ignition system?

Sounds like a wiring issue to me.
Ignition coils do pull a decent amount of current, but no where near enough to load down a batt+alternator.

These are i guess what is called delta wound windings ,they lack good charge rate at low rpm though .I have done it to a bosch but not a N.D
    they have heaps more output,
I would be checking charge/ wiring also.

im getting 13.6v at idle and progressive drop after 3000 rpm down to 12.6v, do fuel pumps draw more current as rpm increases? all my wiring is new, the coil packs are old and so are the connectors to them.
i like those denso alternators, look pricy though, will inquire about them tomorrow

Pumps may draw more current under full noise and full power , but that won't knock the voltage around like that.
Get the car looked at, volts should go up or at least be stable at 3000rpm not go down.

how bad is the charge rate at low rpm? i looking for something for my bundy, to run winch a lights when 4wding, so low rpm could be an issue?
