Default RA40 - Rear Coil Overs, Mount Strength?

My RA40 has an RT142/MA61 IRS in it.
I have been considering rear coil overs in the back similar to the photo attached.
My concern is that it mounts to the current shock/damper mount and weather that mount would be strong enough to perform both duties.
    What do you think??

    will punch out or thru the existing mount point - replace with boxed-in unit much like (tho probably not as thick/tall) dazed_driver's rear housings for his rally car;

Thought about an adjustable height spring seat with a separate shock body?

The guy up here with the replica TA64 used to have an MA61 rally car - he kept the spring & shock separate.

If you go single coil/shock unit you might also have to beef up the lower connection point on the swing arm - there will be a lot of force acting on that point.

chuckster, they are some serious mounts
not to concerned with the bottom mount point, i can beef them up easy.
didn't want to go to over board on the car itself, i was thinking i would need to do something just wanted to be realistic. from what i've found on the net with the ae86 people, some just run them no modification, other have strengthened.

agreed - will largely depend on driving style and the roads - but with the shock mounting on the end of the swing arm, it can exert a large amount of force on the strut.

I had a look at the mcnsport website and they appear to stitch weld the upper mount and the reinforce it by attaching the roll cage to it. At a guess, they also thicken up the hole section with another plate.

I was talking with Craig Aggio recently about suspension stuff (he owns the TA64 replica) and he's had front shocks punch their way thru strut towers but didn't mention the rears failing (but he did keep the shock and strut separate)

I think the ex-Peter Williamson group A Supra ran a coil-over shock - you could ask ArtRacing whether he has any pics of that area of his Supra?

edit: mcnsport pics showing how they did it:

For my Starlet with the TA63 IRS, I have used KE70 front towers to give me plenty of room around the spring and because I know the are designed to take spring loads. Will be re-inforcing the lower mount as well if I ever get the damn thing finished.

thanks rob, chuckster & wde_bdy, all good stuff
chuckster, like you said bottom mount strengthening piss easy, top will be a bit more involved.
i think from this info that strengthening is a must
    Cheers,
