my 7MGTE is cranking out a lot of torque and while the w58 has complained when i abused it, since then been all good.
peewee is dead right, make your weaker point the clutch and not the box, so if anything gives, the clutch will

i have been doing a little research into clutches today.
OEM GTE vs GE clutch specs
Plate (mm) 250 - 236
Pressure (kg) 1060 - 700
these are the two clutches that im looking at

normal HD clutch^^

cushion button clutch^^
im thinking with the lower clamping then the standard GTE clutch that the normal HD is very possibly going to just slip under high load. so im leaning towards the cushion button as that should hold toque better. according to that site its still considered to be street-able for a daily driver which the car is intended to be.
anyone used exedy cushion button?
Hi,
i run a w58 behind my 1jz in an ra28. It has roughly 350rwhp and no worries whatsoever. If you're going to go the w58 gearbox, remember that you have to get the "hens teeth" bellhousing to bolt to the 2jz, and with any decent amount of hp a decent clutch. Luckily for me i bought mine as is so i didn't have to go hunting for those bits. I've seen w58's with 2j bellhousing advertised at the $1000 mark and more! I'll be reshelling my 28 over the next year and i'll be getting rid of my w58 as i scored a FREE r154![]()

thanks for the post ben.
bellhousing isnt an issue to find, im ordering a new one most used ones are more then a brand new one anyway! w58 or 55 are not that expensive or hard to find, i think these a place that sells reco'd ones for about $500 aswell if i got desperate.
found a few options for clutches now, NPC especially have been really helpful and there prices are great too!!
just debating which clutch, there is a 1300kg organic from NPC or 850kg cushion button by exedy
Roadkill, you need to remember your car is significantly lighter than a cressida, which I'll assume is the car he wants the box for. You'll find this is a big factor in how long your box will last compared to his.

while this is true, varients been used in 2wd Hilux for decades and im sure they have been able to pull many loads. mx83 are about the same weight as jza80.... but yes fair bit more toque there. im confident that the box will be fine with the stock motor.
oh and as well as plenty of engines with more power then im going to be putting threw it, not really concerned about the box strength now, more sorting out exactly what clutch ill use.
