Save up your money & buy a R154, there is a lot of doubt in putting one behind a 1J let alone a
2J ...
They are as you would be aware never designed to be put behind such a motor, it will work but i would guess not for very long on boost ..
hey guys,
after failing to find any R154 at a price i can afford, im considering going down the less favorable option of a w-box.
ill be be using a full face HD clutch not a button/multi plate clutch as its my intended daily driver when i get back to Australia.
engine will be kept standard with only a few extra bits such as intercooler (prob cheaper then finding a jzx81 SMIC) and a exhaust that will flow well enough to not completely choke it. aim is to let it live a long life and keep it reliable with some sort of economy, while still having enough chug to pull its fat arse about.
i dont intend on drifting, drag or circuit so it shouldnt break from shock im more worried about it breaking from load? i know the old man had a w58 behind his 308, lasted for about 8 years before it finally let go and busted 1>4th or something. i figure power and vehical weight is probably fairly similar, the 2j may have more toque and rush of power as it comes onto boost.
i can buy a shed full of w58/55 for the price of 1 r154 but im not so keen on replacing broken boxes once a week. for the price they are going for here (japan) and shipping back to aus, id almost be better off going all in and getting a v160
anyway peoples thoughts?
Edit: Also, is a 2jzge/7mge HD clutch going to be enough for stock power? (or is it just going to slip and roll backward down hills? haha). should have a bit better clamp then a stock one but they are a tad smaller in diameter.

yes i know that they where not intended for this sort of motor but a r154 isnt really an option. i guess if i break a few i maybe able to convert to r154 later on on sell the manual JZ gear to someone with a 1j.
apon my return to Aus ill need to get the car running and on the road within a few weeks. i cant exactly get a job without a car so bit hard to 'save up' that sort of cash.
How much are the R154's in Japan, which i pressume is where you are looking ?
What about an Auction car & just stripping it for the bits that you want ?
im currently living in japan so the plan was to buy a R154 and send it back... doesnt seem to be happening
they have gone up a bit in price in the last 12months. looking at around $1000 for the box, some come with a tailshaft/clutch fork some dont, for about $1300 you will get a stock clutch/flywheel as well. prices seem fairly consistant.
these also then shipping inside japan +$200
then container shipping to Aus, prob to brisband maybe another few hundred.
then from bris to tassie $250ish
so would want to allow around $1800-2K for the box alone. plus the other bits.
buying a complete running 1jz manual car here your normally looking at around 3.5K aud. once you take away the manual bits a normal 1jz-gte is not worth much in japan or aus. also then these the cost of transport and i have no where to put a second car, i already have to rent a carpark for the skid bus. i dnt think they would appreciate wrecking a car in a carpark either!
You should be fine.
Plenty of people on here have done it without going through too many boxes.
The key is to not drive like a tool, and to have a forgiving clutch.

thanks.
yeah as mentioned, full face clutch and should be giving it too much abuse from shock.
trying to figure out exactly what bits are what for manual (slightly more tricky now that the diagrams on toyodiy have been taken down).
I've got a w58 behind my 487rwhp 2J. Hasn't exploded yet.
I'm running an organic clutch with a custom pressure plate. So far it survived 2 years behind the 2J while it was fairly stock, then another 6 or so months and 2 quarter mile runs @ 425hp.
It survived the 487hp road & dyno tuning. Plus plenty of abuse since then.
I'm putting it's survival down to the following though:
1. No flat shifting
2. Organic clutch
3. Falken 235 tyres on the rear aren't providing much traction. Half throttle in third is enough to spin the rears.
Whether it survives the next quarter mile adventures is unlikely (well I figure I've been pushing my luck for a while now).. but its not making any odd noises..... yet.![]()
Just found a place with 2 x R 154s here in Aus for $950 each.
Anyone interested ?![]()
r154 for $950 each or w58???
hhmm, thats also interesting that your still using a organic full face clutch! are you getting slip with it or is it still hanging in there alright?
They have in stock 2 x R154s @ $950 ea.
Just PMd you the contact info for them![]()
thanks, looks like im really going to have to do some thinking now!!!
