I can't say I have ever used one of those auto's so I am not sure what you mean as far as independent and live rear diffs, most gearbox's all have some form of gearbox yoke and if you have one to fit the gearbox you have all I usually do is get the front yoke that fits your gearbox and the back uni that bolts to your diff (whatever that's going to be) and take that down to the diff shop and have a new tailshaft made. This usually costs me around $250- $300 trade price and all is good.
If for some reason that gearbox doesn't use a tailshaft (then I'm not sure how it works) or you can't get a yoke to fit what you have then I would suggest you just swap the extension housing and shaft for something that you can get a yoke for and do the same thing.
The thing with your conversion will be that no matter what shaft you use, I would be suprised if any of them will bolt up to you diff anyway so as long as you get a yoke to fit the back of your box then the custom way is the easiest, and not that expensive really (considering what the rest of the conversion will probably set you back).
I hope that answers your question
