I chucked a plumb back in to shut the thing up, but it's still noisy... but you're right OMR, anything that is more cop friendly is a good thing... engineer's certificate probably being the best of these cop friendly things

    Hi,

Indeed my Dark Friend. The engineer has had a cursory look and advised the ceramic coating on the manifold, turbo housing and dump pipe, along with an air-box and a PB BOV, and upgraded front brakes.

Got the air-box and PB BOV already done, the ceramic coating is being done, and the brake upgrade has been ordered.

I'll probably go for a heat sheild also, if it can fit, to protect the air-con unit and, if possible, the upgraded alternator.

I aim to get all requirements for the engineer so the certification will be painless, except for dent in the wallet.

Rather amusing actually, considering I'll really be just put-putting about the local streets at 50kph in her. Mind you, I know she's got the spirit in case I need it.

    KEnut:
Not really a fair point re water hammer in household plumbing, as you said it, water can't be compressed.
Large pump shut offs without slow ramping of speed, or the slow closing of an outlet valve first, creates a pressure wave similar to not using a BOV. However, as water can't be compressed, it behaves quite differently. A pump moving 200L/sec, at about 320KPa had the power to cause ~25 water main breaks in a 1.5km radius, and shatter a 900mm thick concrete thrust block on the pump outlet, when the outlet control valve failed to close before pump shutoff.
    Similar-ish theory, but quite different.

All that said I run a BOV. I'm not really sure one way or another re longer turbo life, but there are 2 reasons I use one.
I see the movement of the silicon joiners and intercooler plumbing without the BOV, and think that's wear I can do without. Around my turbo outlet hose (rubber), there is oil cooler lines, power steering lines, actuator / boost control solenoid lines, assorted coolent / radiator hoses etc etc. The less chance I have of these things contacting or rubbing against each other the better.
I also hate the fooly sik fluttttterrrs. Its police attention I can do without, and I just don't like the sound.

Yeah that's the reason why i'd run a Bypass valve like I mentioned before, The Cooler pipes and pipe before the turbo mouth shakes so violently, so the reversion must be putting load on the bearings quite a bit.

as was said before. newer ball bearing turbios probably deal with it a lot better. dunno about older bush bearing turbos though.

until someone really sets out to do some definitive research and document it we wont know for sure

I think the most important question is,

can i run a BOV on my SR20 into AW-11 conversion?
