However, the 3.8 is easy to work with, good to turbo, and they're EVERYWHERE.

were scratching our head flat out tryin to come up with a motor box package for my mates ute. its a rn41 hilux 80 model with a shitty smokey 18r column shift 4spd. ive been hunting an 18rg for months, and there hard to find, and i guess parts will be also down the track. so now were thinking 1g, 18rg,21re, or 3.8 commodore motor. then it got me thinking bout a 1UZfe or a 3rz. Can anyone shed some light on a ideal conversion for this ute? money tools and time and skill is there but stumped as to what would be good motor to have plenty of poke and nice driving. cars in qld whether laws put out of favour for the 1UZ

dude i started with the same package as you did.. ended up with a 1ggte and the supra 5 speed. fits in mintwasn;'t really a expensive has i had thought.
upgraded from all drum brakes to 4wheel disc's and mx83 master cylinder.
upgraded to pwr steering.
