All you need to do to shim the oil pump is remove it from the front of the motor and undo the big bolt (carefully since it has a spring behind it) and place a washer ~1.5mm thick in the bolt for the spring to sit against so it is under more tension which raises the pressure at WOT. And I do believe it is a worthwhile thing to do, since these have a habit of oil starvation to 1 and 6 big ends.

Built motors often make random noises like that when they are first started up.. Could it not just be attributed to that?
