Default Rattling noise from engine bay under stress??

    Hey guys,

My GFs Barina is making annoying rattling noises from the engine bay while accelerating or going up hills. it sounds like somethings loose like bolts or something. Anyone got any ideas what it could be??

    Thanks guys

    probably pinging (detonation)
did it start after filling up with fuel - maybe a bad batch
    had it tuned recently?

I would second that, next time the car is near empty, try filling it with a batch of Premium fuel... Late Barinas (both Euro and Korean) seem pretty bad for Pinging.. As did Camiras before them.

The good people at Wiki have a bit on Pinging.

My sister in laws Barina (the opel corsa ones) sounded awful and even a bit like a diesel, down on power n horrible with passengers simply because the timing belt was overdue to be changed. Might be worth checking that out.

It is pinging / knocking. Almost every barina will do it under heavy load, especially an SB / XC, especially an automatic.

Fill tank with BP 98 octane, never look back.

It will stop the pinging, help GREATLY with the heavy carbon build-up problems the Z/X 14XE motors are prone to (if it is the last of the euro-made barina model, the XC), plus normal benefits when switching to 98 octane.

Don't change into higher gears when going up hills etc on hot days My AE92 corolla does it too on hot days, I have to hold it through the gears longer on those occasions.

or just put better fuel in it!!

if GF is too tight to spring for 98RON then give the dizzy a twist and pull some timing out.... i assume a barina doesnt run coilpacks or anything like that

she wont get 98 though, costs too much. DW i always get 98. have to with my ecu anyway

    Quick question, 'plug'?
    Where's this plug located?
    Thanks.

The "plug" is located between the strut and firewall. has 91 on one side 95 on the other. according to the owners manual it will "tune" to the fuel if you change the plug around.

Dead set, how much more could it cost each week to run a Barina on Premium... or even go half and half.... $3 , $5 at the outside?

nice, must add more timing on the 95 setting

rig it up to a mom contact switch on the steering wheel and tell her its NOS

why would you change the octane rating plug over to 95 if you're not running it on 95?!?!?!?!?!?!!? This advances the ignition timing in an attempt to make more power in markets that have higher quality fuel than us.

Don't touch it unless you plan to put the right fuel in it

It just advances the ignition timing by a few degrees.
