Strange engine noise?

Hey,
I've heard this noise come from many engines (including my own at one point) were the car sounds like a truck? (diesel)

Its not detonation is it?

I dont think i've heard detonation before so i wouldnt know what it sounds like.

can you be any less specific?? diesels make a lot of noise.. you mean pinging? or runnign on? or your car happens to have an air starter?

for pinging... take a screw driver and tap it on the engine... do it quickly... thats kinda what it sounds like.

Its a weird noise....ummm, like if you got the plastic end of te screwdriver and banged it quickly yeah like that.
My car is a celica ST162 (3SFE) and i have heard one of those 2 door lancers do it too.
Sounds like shit.

If its pinging, should i just always run it on premium?

It also makes that noise while accelerating, usually at low speeds.

is it when youre under heavy load (ie: full throttle?) or constant, this will help a lot in diagnosis.

not under full load, more like heavy loads (up hills etc, and the accelerator is not fully depressed)

so how ur tappets going?
sounds like you mite have a bolt loose causing something to tap on your engine bloke.....
or u should just sell it and buy the ke70 you want......

yes, it sounds like pinging.. does the sound stop when you take your foot off accelerator?

yes you should probably run it on premium. try it. see if the noise stops...

i think mites are generally too small for an engine bloke to notice any tapping....

Its definitely pinging - get your timing checked, or if its a hi-po engine then you'll need hi-octane fuel.

Its a 3sfe? Thats not hi-po (in my book)... My money's on the timing being too far advanced... do these cars use distributors or crank angle sensors?

Distributor, it very well may be the timing.
many things are loose in the engine. I'll get service+tune next week, cheers all.
(haha, btw, my engine is def not hi-po)
