Thats what i was thinking in fitting the old box without the bellhousing, then you would have room to do the bolts up

I use a kinchrome allignment tool, it was about $15 and i've used it about 10 times and havent had to bring the gearbox down once!
It allows you to align the clutch and PP off the car and bolt it on as one.

lining up my mates clutch, i left the clutch loose, put the gear box in, then took it back out, and tightened it back up...

was kinda hard, as the gearbox didnt come out PERFECTLY straight, so it slipped a bit, bt we managed to muscle it in alot easier.

this is after we took a look at Matty (Wildsupra)'s clutch aligning tool, and laughed.

Have a chat to the guys at your local gearbox place, you might get lucky.
I picked up a stuffed input shaft for free when i was swapping the clutch in a VL, the guy just pulled it out of the bin for me.

Saved a good 15 mins of stuffing around aligning the clutch, it almost went in quicker than it came out.
    Good. Fast. Cheap.

Over the years I have changed out a good 20-30 gearboxes, in fact probably more, and never used a clutch aligning tool.

I've stressed a lot unnecessarily too, if I'd just spent the money in the first place....

I got one made by the local clutch place for $10, they simply machined it up from nylon type rod with the clutch kit and spigot bearing for reference.
