W58 7M-GTE clutch choice

guys

after my heavy duty clutch deciding it's going to die, i need a new clutch:

I'm currently running a heavy duty clutch on the stock 9" (not 9 1/4") 5M flywheel.

I'm going to upgrade to the 7MGE flywheel but will require a stronger clutch.

What would a good choice be for the W58 and 7MGTE? I'm aiming for a final power figure of around or just over 200rwkw...

I've been thinking of a brass button, but have been told an Exeedy Heavy duty clutch for 7M-GE will do the trick. I'm not interested in burnout, dropping the clutch of flatshifting, but keep in mind I came dead last in toymods go-karting, so the realisation I'm probably a crap driver is more frightening than ever.

Any opinions/recommendations are highly appreciated.

i put an Exeedy Heavy duty clutch in my 1G, i don't mine it. i was warned against brass button becasue they are just that, it is pretty much on or off, there is very little smooth transition when you pull out the clutch. so i would go another heavy duty, if you want a button maybe a ceramic one? as i don't think they are as grippy as brass ones, but you should get conformation on that

I would've thought that much power would be managable. Mine is a heavy duty Daikin which cops some punishment from time to time.

You know my clutch combo Ryley. Stock 5me flywheel mated to a sprung centre 4 puck. James has driven it and gotten the hang of it after about 30 seconds. Brass buttons aren't really that hard to drive with really.

Oh, and it does cop some good punishment.

I recently got a Exedy heavy duty cushioned button clutch. It so far seems great, feels like a normal full face clutch to drive. I'm yet to see how much power it holds up to, but i'm confident it will be fine.

I've been using a 5-puck ceramic button clutch (they don't really use brass any more) with a sprung centre behind my 2JZ. It lasted two and a half years before one of the springs broke, and it copped a hell of a lot of abuse in that time without a hint of slippage.

Despite what some people think about these sort of clutches it's not difficult to drive at all; sure it's not as user-friendly as a stock clutch but it's certainly not "on-off" either. After about a week you'll be able to drive it just as easily as a stocker.

Note that some button clutches are ridiculous to drive on the street. I once drove a Supra with a 3-puck solid centre and mega-clamp pressure plate; there's no way I'd put up with that in my car! As with all things it depends on how it was designed. I recommend you speak with a clutch specialist, tell them your requirements and they'll be able to give you the options.

is the 7mge flywheel a worthwhile upgrade? what's different from the 4m to 5m flywheel peewee?

Yep, I would very much recommend a clutch specialist

As for the 7mge flywheel, the 5me one is 225mm OD verus the 240mm OD of the 7mge one, that is a lot more clamping area! Especially when you take into account the fact that the moment of force exerted increases exponentially with the distance from the centre of a rotating body (such as in a flywheel ). Also the fact that Toyota upgraded as the power increases too

Another bonus is that the 2jzge clutch (and associated clutch / pressure plate kits), will fit the 7mge flywheel I believe.

Slightly off topic. But, is it possible to use a 7mgte flywheel? Have a clutch made up to suit the diameter of the GTE flywheel and the w58?

You can...I looked something similar (not in depth) at one stage.

I was told that it was possible to redrill / dowel for a push type pressure plate. However wether the total height remains the same is something that you will have to look into..

The stock, or equivalent 7mgte clutch plate should fit as R154 and W5X share the same input shaft splines.

I have an exedy 5 puck button clutch and pressure plate with 32% extra clamping (which is the maximum listed in their catalog for 7MGE). I also run a 7MGE flywheel. The clutch generally seems pretty good however when running 15psi boost with an engine that made 200rwkw at 10psi it will still slip the clutch in 4th and 5th gears when full boost is acheived unless changing into one of those gears at high RPM (ie; if I floor it in 5th off boost to overtake the clutch will spin once I hit about 14psi, however at the drags changing into 4th at 6500rpm yielded no slippage that I could detect)

Ive had the clutch back to B&R brakes where I purchased it but they cant find any problems (they also machined the flywheel pre-install as well so thats not it) so if you're looking to run 200+ rwkw I might suggest perhaps another brand that supplies pressure plates with higher clamping forces for these N/A engine flywheels.
