Actually, GX81 is the far right with is the correct shifter to use in X8 manual conversion with a 6 cylinder engine using factory mounts (MX83 - 7M-GE, GX81 - 1G-GTE, JZX81 if you wish - 1JZ-GTE).
The other shifter position may be available on shorter engines (4 cylinder or desiel) but i seriously doubt that because if the 6 requires the rear most shifter and its also the longest engine then it means the others are either further back in the engine bay of have a very long bellhousing and i dont think the W5x came with different lenght input shafts like the R154 did. That and the GX81 will always have a 1G engine.
The R154 didn't come with different length shafts either, it was the R151 that had a shorter shaft.
Are you sure the GX81 is far right?
I only question because you can't compare a manual converted auto, to a factory manual.
They have different sized/located holes in the floor.
What fits perfectly in a manual conversion may not fit in the original (and vice-versa)

LX80 and GX81 have different part numbers for their lever housings
Ah, maybe its LX80 I'm thinking is second from left then.

Definite on the GX81 - JP's old Chaser was a factory manual GX81 and that is what i have used for reference.
old_school_jap1 - you may have noticed that i was only definite on the GX81, as i have no interest for any of the 4 cylinder engines (4S, 3Y and 2L) so dont know much about them. I gues you have gone off ToyoDIY and oyu will note that the LX80 retainer is only applicable to the LX81, nothing else. The GX81 is also applicable to the SX80 and YX81 - so supports CrUZidas notion that the LX80 is different.
I was under the impression that the W55 had a shifter position close to that of a T50. Whats it going behind? Also I hope the bellhousing you ordered wasn't a dellows
Depends what car the W55 came out of ?
RT142, GX61, no doubt there are some others as well.

I can confirm that RT142 is the FAR LEFT in the pic above.
...... butt scratcher?!
good the niteparts bellhousing seems to be decent from the reports I hear. Why W58 though? wouldnt the ratios be all wrong for something like a 4gze?
As long as you select the right diff the ratios should be fine.

I have a few w58's, about to install one behind a turbo 20v (also using niteparts bellhousing and 230mm GZE flywheel and clutch), from what i understand the w58 ratios are the closest to the t50.
and the gx and ma70 shifter positions are both within 1 inch of the factory aeXX position.
hope some of that helps mate!

Just to add to the wealth of info in this thread, GZ20 box is second from the right in the wonderful photo already posted. In an AE86 the shifter comes out right at the back of the shifter hole in the floor. I embiggened the hole by 10mm to be sure.

I need a working 4AGE bottom end. Pref smallport GZE, but all others considered. Also complete motors.
Drift Volvo. Was fun. 2JZ next time.
