    Default W58 into AE71 Panelvan

Hey guys my mate is just about ready to throw his 4agze into his ae71 panelvan.

Just searching for a box for him and have found one out of an MA61 supra.

Is the shifter position in the right spot? or is there an W58 that i could use with the shifter position in the right spot, or are they all going to need modding of some kind.

    You called?

ok. I have been looking into this also.

You need your gearbox; RA65/63 is supposedly the best shifter position (confirm on this however)

You need a bellhousing; Dellows (ew) and niteparts are two that i know of. Niteparts were about $500 plus shipping from nz last time i checked.

Bonus is you can run the gze flywheel with the larger clutch face. You may need to have your plate modified to fit the w58 output shaft.

    Yep bellhousing is ordered...

the thing i need to know is if we get an ma61 box will the shifter position be one of the closest to being right or one of the furthers away.

MA61 is forward type position i think.
RT142 also has the forward type shifter position.

The clutch plate spline needs to the match the gearbox, any decent clutch place should be able to sort you out for that. I have very very very vague recollections of the GZE clutch already having the right spline (due to running a stronger FWD box) but can in no way confirm that. I put a W55 from an RA63 into my KE70 with the 18RG, gearlever was pretty well spot on maybe slightly forward on standard. This will depend on placement of engine as well of course.

NO - you run a GZE clutch with the GZE flywheel.
Make sure you measure the PCD of the pressure plate bolts on the flywheel, and check the diameter of the flyhweel/clutch mating face.

REASON - there are two type of GZE flywheels and clutches. The more common is the 225mm clutch, and the less common 230mm. They also have a slightly different pressure plate too. Make sure you get the right one.

You shouldnt need to modify your clutch plate at all - the E5x and W5x gearboxes use the same input shaft.

Dean, regarding swapping shifter positions, all internal W5x shifters are interchangable.

Have a look at the manual for the exact steps but the basics are that you have to remove the rear half of the gearbox (extension housing) and swap the metal arm (shift lever housing). You will also need to swap the top alloy piece (shift lever control retainer) and possibly the oil baffle plate.

Not too sure on what particular celica cam with what shifter but they should be close. The only reason I have seen for different shifter positions in the same body was for compensating between a straight-4 and a straight-6 (RS200 vs IS200).

hmmm seems like a little bit of fiddling around. the guy thats doing it would be able to do it thats not the issue.

Would he be better of running a W55 and getting the shifter position correct.

Wonder how far forward the ma61 w58 sits.

The MA61 is supposed to be the second from the left.

As for changing them, its not very hard at all. I have done it to your old gearbox.
