big port small port ST BT GZE(MAP) and GZE (AFM) ... all the different variations of the 4A-GE ... do they have the same specifications?? otherwise could you guys edit the post to specify which version of the 4A-GE u're specifying ?

As far as the 16v Engine specs go.. IE bore / stroke / head cc's / gasket thickness and deckheight the are all the same.

AFAIK the 8.9:1 Vs the 8.0:1 engines have the same deck height but different piston volumes.


The 20v im not to sure about. The bore / stroke will be the same but the deck height and combustion chamber volume will prob be different.

blacktop specs are the same as silvertop asfar as torques settings etc go

There are 2 different Torque setting for conrod bolts .. This depends if the con rod nut is a single or multi hex nut , Multi hex is the later type with the torque turns .inc in its tension setting

frequently ignored.... loosening pattern for 4AGE headbolts...

headbolt torque is NOT just 22 then 90, then 90. Early 4AGE head bolt torque is 44#s. Headbolts are NOT stretch type

they are..... look in the manual... the toyota manual not a haynes one, im looking at one now...
ALL toyota bolts that use a degree torque method are stretch type.....
i cant think of any toyota engine built in the last 20 years that doesnt have plastic region bolts.
and torque is 22 then 90, 90......

in my later manual, for redtop bigports it lists width and lenghts etc of the bolts
in the earlier one we have here at work, it doesnt
now, when i look at the p/n of the bolts
the part numbers for the head bolts were superceded..... so, its possible that when the bluetops were released they were not torque to yeild. later versions were and the bluetop part number was replaced by the later one.

Well i personally rang toyota and asked them and they said they werent torque to yield and that they were reusable. Now afaik its not like toyota to miss out on what is iirc circa $10 a bolt.

also a good idea is to go by half turns when loosening, instead of just ripping each bolt straight out while the rest are still to torque spec

I have the older EPC... they list only one pair of part#s (one # for intake side, a second for exhaust side) for all 4AGE from 84 through 6 of 92 - end of Toyota 4AGE US... 4AGE was still available in Geo Prism(rebodied 4door corolla) for another year I believe

Those dates would mean the bolts were used on TVIS and non TVIS engines. Of course the Toyota EPC could be wrong.....

Very good point! For those that care... On tightening... using 44#s... I'd go to 25 on all, then 35 on all then to 44..... in a way it was like going 22 then 90/90...

See... I was taught this from old techs... NEVER just go to a bolt torque... always try to do it in thirds... or even more rounds if bolt torque is higher I'm guessing many people know this... but since toyota bolts weren't stretch... and they changed the procedure... it tells me some thing changed.....
