    Default gear box circlip help

    hi everyone

i'm having some trouble with my 1992 1jz auto soarer.

the speedo in the car stopped working due to a plastic cog wearing away. i replaced the cog and that one too wore away. i found out there's a metal cog inside the extension housing on the gear box that gets rusty and in turn chews up the plastic drive cogs

so i've pulled the extension housing cover off. i removed the circlip holding the metal cog on by shimmying it up the output shaft. but now i can't for the love of me get the clip back on.

it was mentioned to use a pair of circlip pliers and i have a set that look like this but i have no idea how to use them in a way to help me.

    any help would be appreciated.

You want a pair of flat nose circlip pliers, which have noses like this:

If you find some tell me, because i want some too

Tried hammer and pushed straight-over the point?

Looks like it should have a slot in the shaft by the looks of the clip

Cuzzo- Maybe for a smaller clip but thats abit too big for the brutal method. High tensile steel tends to shoot off either across the garage floor or into you eye.

Taki- Right idea but wrong type. You will need the ones with the grooves on the out side

Yeah, i said you need the external flat nosed circlip pliers. I was giving an example as to what flat nosed meant.

yeah i tried that just to see how much it would flex.... it just shot off somewhere, was lucky to find it.

the only other thing i thought i might try was get a washer thats big enough to sit over the shaft to apply pressure the whole way round and try wiggling that on.

Look for Lock Ring pliers or Snap Ring Pliers

two flat blade screwdrivers on either end and push out but have a friend holding it towards the shaft.
    Wont take too much effort.

What he said. Do it where you can find it if it flicks off into hyperspace.

could a more conventional circlip be used? would cost of what $0.30? that way a normal circlip pliers could do the trick

    like this

or you could buy a cheap pair of needle nose pliers and grind some flats on the ends, however you will need to pull the handles out rather than squeeze like normal but will work ok.

a more conventional circlip would work providing it's the same thickness and doesn't protrude beyond the internal diameter of the gear as it may foul on the plastic speedo gear.
