Practically all RWD 5-speed Toyotas from about 1982 onwards will have a W5x transmission of some sort. There are a few exceptions (eg Supra turbo) but the W5x series was Toyota's bread-and-butter manual transmission for at least 2 decades.

In addition to the above comments, I'll confirm that RT142s definitely have a W55/7/8. I pulled one out the other day.
And I've heard it claimed that it is a 58.

I need a working 4AGE bottom end. Pref smallport GZE, but all others considered. Also complete motors.
Drift Volvo. Was fun. 2JZ next time.
And, what by chance are you going to do with that little piece of metal?Originally Posted by Hen
You can always glance at the plate on the wirewall as it will say what thansmission it has. Also have a gander at Wikipedia its got some good info on the W series boxes.

Spoken like a true Internet forum participant. You can always glance at the plate on the wirewall as it will say what thansmission it has.
RT142s (well, the three I've owned, and the hundreds I've looked at in wrecking yards) don't have any useful transmission information on them.
I can definitely confirm that they're a W55/W57/W58, having pulled a couple out - I'd wager a W58 based on the fact that they rev at about 2400rpm on the highway, but I've never actually checked the 5th gear ratio specifically so take that with a grain of salt.
Must.... avoid.... urge... to... upgrade... parts I haven't.... used.... yet.....
Ok my bad, well other cars have the plates.

Put it in the shed (Jezza's shed in fact) until either he or I breaks one. I wager he'll do it first.Originally Posted by twentyEight
And Shifty, no there was no useful info. Plus at Pick-a-part they often/usually have the nameplates pulled off.

i dont get it, if W58's are so good, and transmissions at the wreckers go for about 150, why arent people pullin em out, and sellin them here for more?
Now targeting, people who are now targeting!!
how many w58s do you see in your local wreckers?
Depends on how many RT142s that you see...
RT142's have W55 boxes, with a truck like 1st gear,
most of the details on the plate's are missing, so hard to tell what gearbox it is..
The one way, i've found to tell if W58, is to look at the clutch pedal box, as the W58, allways use's, the GT assisted, clutch pedal... it has extra leaver's & springs.
All "W" boxes are as strong as each other, untill '90, when fitted to, turbo motor's, they had a larger input shaft..
W57 is a close ratio box, 5th gear, is not as tall, as the W58.

I don't have first hand experience on that, but I'm lead to believe otherwise...Originally Posted by GA61XX
I'm pretty sure that isn't true. I'm pretty sure that I've seen MA61's with both types of clutch pedals, as well as RA65s...Originally Posted by GA61XX
This isn't true. I've had a few W5x boxes apart and have compared them. The input shaft is slightly different (the fillet where it enlarges is flat as opposed to concave), but that is very very small.Originally Posted by GA61XX
Some bearings and gears are wider however (it is the larger input shaft bit I disagree with).
And your saying that the post 90 boxes that were fitted to 1G-GTEs (turbo) were different to the 7M-GE boxes (non turbo?)....? Yes there was a revision (I'm lead to believe in 89), but I'm pretty sure it wasn't engine specific.
Just trying to sort out a little bit of fact from fiction...
