    BACK ON TRACK.

I re assembled the motor and made sure that I dialed the ignition timing well back of where it was, and wouldnt you know it...she runs cold! Its right back where it was years ago where I'm struggling to keep the car warm. I've had her out a few nights and all is well for the last 200km.

THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR THEIR HELP!

So, back to the business of why I started this silly thread.

The car is still set up as per the first post on the thread...

What can I do to get more out of the engine? I have a 4age tb that I have modified which I have yet to try that should provide a few hp if it works, and I can still add cams. Are there any other things I can do to pull more out of the setup that I have or are there other initiatives I should undertake? I'd like to avoid changing the ecu if possible...

    Thoughts?

    turbo

or the gen 3 3s TB that i think has already been suggested, 2.5" manifold back zorst, buy a set of vernier cam gears and close up the overlap a little,

seriously though unless your really determined to keep the SC it will get expensive real quick if it becomes damaged.

On another thought, have you considered rebuilding the entire motor so that everything is how it should be? 133kW atw is "okay" for your current list of mods but i think it should have made more.

Im looking in to getting some more aggressive cams and gears, and am going to get a tb upgrade on there one way or another. Id like to max the perfomance of the sc setup without leaving the ecu?s abilities

Is it only the gen 3 3sgte tb I can use or will one from say, a earlier 3sg/5sf work? Anyone know?

the problem with changing parts like the size of throttle body or adding different cams and making air flow improvements but using the factory ecu.. is the ecu can only adapt so far. the more it's modified, the less accurate the efi will be. the afm version is more adaptable to modifications. there's a point where you'll have to start medling with the tune and an air/fuel meter installed is a good way to find out when. if you follow what people have done and is confirmed to work well you can't go too wrong though.
still cant believe you're running an ae86 ecu with boost making 133rwkw and not having tune issues. did you check airfuel ratio when on the dyno? is the fuelling anywhere near close, on and off boost? wont it be over advancing ignition when on boost? sorry if this has already been questioned... lean mixture or too much spark advance makes it run hot too

264 degree cams is about as far as you should really go on a stock ECU. I'm not sure how big the TB can be though, I went to 55mm and was happy. I might bore out to 60mm later if I feel like it and the simulations agree. The size you need really just depends on your intake pipe size, you want to tune the pipework to your engine package as a whole.
The problem with the AFM, is it presents a significant restriction itself. You might upgrade your intake piping, throttle body, cams, exhaust, etc, but your still sucking through the same sized, restrictive AFM. A MAP sensored engine doesn't have this problem.

Well, the air/fuel on the car runs in the mid to high 11's on average, though I haven't messed w the AFM in a while and think I can do better. I haven't had luck w the 3S tb upgrade as 3sgte's are hard to find around here. But if as you said any 's' engine tb will work, there are plenty of 5s engines in camry's and things locally. Finding an sc14 is impossible without buying the whole car from another country. I'd like to get the mr2 tb back on and get those issues dialed out, then try the 's' tb if it does work as you say. Rumour has it supra afms or sw20 afms may also be compatible and larger in size. I also need to redo my cold side intercooler piping as it is too small (2" vs 2.5").

It is hard to believe, but yes it has pulled 133kw on the ae86 ecu. I use a gtech system to get these and other perf numbers like 1/4 mile, 0-60 etc. Right now it says its only doing 110kw, I assume because it is not hitting full boost. I have a full run of air/fuel, egt and other guages in the car w data playback.

Sorry for double post. I use my blackberry to post here from the other side of the planet. It won't let me delete or erase the second post.

Mr. Operative: I found a thread on an old toymods forum that you posted 5 years sgo but there were no pictures left in the thread. Is there a thread that is current or has better step by step than this one?

One of the local guys is apparently using a 5mge tb and has been for years. I may be able to use it and even a 5mge afm in combination to increase airflow volume.
