No, you don't need to touch the crank pulley on a 1jz-gte to loosen/remove the timing belt tensioner - just use an socket extension to reach and loosen the two bolts either side of the tensioner.
do i have to take the crank pulley off to get to the timing belt tensioner on a 1jzgte? if so that will suck balls because my motor sits so low in the bay that i would have to take the motor out to get a rattle gun onto the crank pulley bolt![]()

ok im a bit new to the whole 1jz thing so forgive my ignorance. I am attempting to install an adjustable cam gear on the exhaust side reason being its a vvti version so only 1 will go on.
So is the fan belt tensioner the timing belt tensioner also? how do i release/loosen the timing belt tensioner to get the cam gear off?

Very different tensioners mate - have a read of this belt replacement guide for the 2jz-gte which will give you an idea of the parts involved.
http://www.supras-ireland.net/manual...eplacement.pdf
In a nutshell you need to loosen the tensioner in section 8 (a) of page 4 (EG-25) to allow enough timing belt slack to slip the exhaust timing gear off and the replacement back on underneath the belt without skipping any teeth on the intake cam or crank shaft.
Not a job for the faint hearted or inexperienced but doable for your average tinkerer with a bit of preparation and the right tools.

Hey Manny , Any chance you could use the same method for changing camshafts on a normal 1jz ? Or would you suggest doing it properly ?

You do slacken off the tensioner bolts in a similar manner but you would need to do a bit more work to remove the cams - besides both camgears, the sheet metal plate behind the cam gears needs to come off to get the front cap(s) off properly as well as lifting the camshaft(s) vertically.
You would also want to replace the cam seal while you're at it as well as ready access to applying FIPG betweem the front caps and head.

what the mang is on the intake cam sprocket?
As they say in the book, assembly is the reverse of dismantling, but slower cos you forgot where all the bits are
It's VVTi, that's what they look likeOriginally Posted by HAVABEER
