Look at the top coolant outlet to the radiator. The little spade on the front of it is for the temperature gauge, and the green and brown ones underneath the dizzy are the ECU temp sensor and cold start switch respectively.
could someone tell me where it is. I have a jaycar voltage switch thing that i'm am going to use to control some thermo fans. I was reading on a copy of autospeed just before that it pretty much will work off any resiistive sensor so i tohught instead of welding a bung in the radiator or hjaving a wire in the top hose, just bridge off the temp sensor.
Would it be easier just to splice the loom at the ecu for this or the temp sensor.
Cheers,
Rob

so there are two difernt outputs for the temp sensor. One to the ECU and another one for the ECU input? Having never done this would you have a recomendation on which one to use? I guess it wouldnt matter.
Thanks mate
There are 3 temp sensorsOne to ECU, one for the gauge, and one for the cold start circuit. I'd be using the gauge one personally.

I just checked it, so the temp gauge one looks to be a yellow cable with a black stripe.
Sorry, but i have never delt with anything like this. If it is working as a thermo resistor how can the resistance be mesured off one cable?
Or is it a completely different idea. Yeah i have no idea how to make that work with one terminal. Any ideas?
also just had another look and both the ECU and cold start have two wires. Now i am confused.

Bah, I knew putting respectively in there was the wrong thing to doI know they're the other way round, but I was too lazy to fix it

looks like i'll just tap onto the cold start then unless there are any reason not to.]
Thanks jcmf and cruzida
Tap into the GREEN one, the normal temp sensor, NOT the brown one (the CSI sensor).
And YES this will affect the temperature the ECU sees.
It is a dodgy way of doing it.

how will it affect the ECU if i just go parallel across the sensor. Isnt it essentialy a thermo resistor. And why is it dodgy, i thought it was a good idea. Not having to solder a bung into the radiator or run a cable in the top hose etc. If you have a better idea please tell me.
It will affect the resistance of the sensor as you are running 2 things off it.
While it may only be slight, it will do it.
The best solution is to use a Tridon temp sensor that will turn on the thermo's at the desired temp and off at the desired temp.
You place this sensor in the coolant path where ever you choose.
Yes, the method you are suggesting is not as bad as using one of those probes in the top radiator hose (*shudders*), but its not as good as using a dedicated sensor.

Why can't he just use the temp gauge one? Are you referring to the power source being the issue? seeing as how it's pull to ground and all.
Temp guage one is probably the best to use of the stock sensors.
Providing the Jaycar can be configured to work within its resistance values.
Keep an eye on the guage the first few times though, as it may slightly change where the needle sits.

I would like to use the temp gauge one but am unsure of how to. Unless i am looking at the wrong sensor, the temp gauge only has one contact. I have no idea how you could measure resistance off that. From my knowledge it cant be done, unless its measuring the outher side thorugh ground. Is this the case?
AM i looking at the right sensor? Looks something like a bolt on the front of the thermostat housing, has a yellow/black strip wire comming off it.
Thanks guys
