whats the history? have u just bought this? or done a cam belt? they dont just go out of timing so what im getting at is was something done to put the timing out? like did you work on it then it happened, or has it always been like that?
when setting/checking the timing did you bridge the diagnostic terminals?
if it wont start now, it was probably correct in the first place.

there is a PDF of the complete black top manual
it will have the info you need re timing marks etc

go back to basics, check the cam and ignition timing again and get it to where its meant to be, then you can go from there.

If you don't mind me asking, what the approximate mileage and what grade oil were you using?

That idle is pretty unusually high for a stock? engine...

Typically Blacktops unfortunately after their "prime" they slowly die... generally give or take 100,000kms >

I picked the car up nearly a week ago. It didn't feel like a 20V 4AGE at all. I haven't touched anything besides advance the timing a bit.

I've got the manual and when I did go by those marks, it didn't make sense. Both inlet and exhaust vavles were opening pretty much at the same time. Thats why I'm asking for someone to check their timing marks to see if its the same.

It works in this position. If the knock pin is in the other groove, no action.

    Good service history

No idea. Easily over a 100,00kms and I haven't changed the oil yet and how knows what the previous owner was using.

Yeah idle was too high so I blocked the ISC hose and it idles at 500 when cold and 1100 when warm.

    Hmmmm...

Easily over 100,000kms... The previous owner might've been prolonging the engine's life expectancy using thicker oil hence the sluggish overall performance. Even though they love thin oils, they wear out very quickly these elderly blacktops. Signs of old age would be vibrations, sounding like a diesel on idle [Shims or VTC Cam Gear, last time it was my A/C Pulley =| ], its the same with my car atm, I'm having to use thicker oil, lose a lil performace in search for a more quiet and prolonging its lifespan.

Typically Blacktops back home get overhauled ~100,000kms so they don't have to worry about all this. Compression so low... doesn't sound good at all

that doesnt look like the original cam gear for the exhaust side, when i picked up my stock blacktop it had a different cam gear then that. and the amount of sludge underneath that cam cover is horrible. i would say it hasnt had a good oil change for quite some time.

I've seen a few other BT and the cam gear looks the same. Maybe yours is aftermarket?

Yeah the sludge is shocking. I'll give the motor plenty of TLC soon.

    Smile Re: Compression 20V Blacktop

Picked up another compression tester today and tried again.
Lowest was about 175psi and highest 195psi.

I knew the compression couldn't be that low, it seems the hose used to test it out the first time was a bit too long and gave a false reading.

It still doesn't feel like a 20V though, gotta check the VVT valve and give it a good service.

what other 20valve are you comparing it to? and what other car have you driven with a 20valve in it?

I've only driven one other 20V and that was in a AE111.

Depending on mods and condition, you can really see the difference LOL...

    I mean, after being in/driven a fair few AE111s... =P

The ones that have had a hard life seriously have big issues leading into 100,000kms let alone afterwards [Diesel Sounds, Noise Tappets, VTC Noise, etc]. Those that have had a good life are still strongish after 100,000kms, they still have the sound of the above but nowhere near as loud. Thats how I usually tell how good/bad a blacktop condition could be...

Yep lol It seems this motor isn't too bad at all. Flush the oil twice, still filth but alot better than before and I poured some fresh Mobil oil in + filter.

It seems that little changes in ignition timing change the perfomance significantly. I pissed the airbox and snorkels off and took it for a quick spin.

Sounds awesome and goes alot better with the ignish timing set properly

Wait till you get that plenum off and trumpets on

Lane Cove Tunnel never sounded so alive! Don't do such things

I laughed when a mate in a Hilux pulled up next to my mate's AE111 and ask if it was diesel LOL!!!
