Rebuilding the power steer pump is not required! The leak always occurs from the "O" ring that is used in the joint between the pump and the resevoir. The "O" ring is 20cents from Repco outa there box of of various size "O" rings. You will lose all the oil from the resevoir, so cover your alternator with plastic and cloths, simply undo the resevoir mount bolt, and twist the resevoir off, replace "O" ring and refill with TOYOTA POWER STEERING FLIUD. not ATF.

Vibration, whack a new set of plugs in the engine, and hope it is not a lead breaking down. Genuine leads are exxy, but you can buy Topgun replacement leads, for 1/3 the price..

Aftermarket leads have actually all gone up in price.

They used to be about $170, but they are now about $220.
Still a lot less than the genuine $400+, but the quality is much much higher with gen.

Top Gun, Bosch, Eagle all do leads - all about same cost. Magnecor advertise they do, but I've never seen a set in Aust (or priced)

you guys are a bunch of legends! ok i got some more issues -

the motor seems to really be lacking power. But i suspect its the auto, it's not very willing to downshift, is there an adjustment for this? (hydrualic kick down cable?), The OD botton on the gear stick doesnt do anything on the dash, it might not be doing anything at all, i've only just had a proper test drive about an hour ago.

The motor is making some strange noises, and is not as quite as what i expected, i might have to get some recordings. The owners have been running it on 91 octane for years. It might be pinging, i'll put some 98octane in and reset the computer and see how it goes.

There is all matter of clunks and clanks in the steering and front wheels when going over bumps, most likely bushings, i'll take the wheels off and have a better look tomorrow.
Also there is a ticking (bad CV type noise) when turning any clues what that might be?

There is no adjustment on the kickdown, unless the TPS is faulty.

Pushing the OD button (ie, making it go out) should bring up O/D OFF on the dash, and should prevent it from going into OD.

Get someone who knows about 1UZ's over there before you drive it further.

Paying $2000, I'd expect to have to replace stuff.....

What noises are coming from the motor?
In what way is it 'not running like expected'?

brett_celicacoupe has the manual pages for it in photo form. Send him a PM.

All I meant is that you can do damage to parts if you drive while its in a bad way.
And if you don't know what you are looking for it may take a while to find out whats wrong.

yep for $2000 it was garanteed to need work, but well worth it, smoothest car i've ever driven -

Motor noises include an on and off squel noise, could be the power steering pump, tensioner pulley i suppose. Will inspect. Also some pretty noisy injectors and cam clearance noises but again for $2000 i shouldnt be surprised.

Other noises include a rattle like somethigns loose, i wandered if it was pinging as it only seemed to do it under load. (drive home from sellers house). But he has been using 91 octane.

TRC light comes on and stays on, so something is up with that, i'll have to get onto brett_celicacoupe and go thru the procedure on troubleshooting that too.

TRC Light coming on would explain why it doesnt kick down

my old green one did that for a while...before I got time to work out what it was it magically fixed itself

Yeah i think its the same for mine, as soon as the auto gets up into O/D it seems to come on.

Anybody know of any good places to get ls400/celsior parts from?? not much on ebay at the moment.

the car came with 1 key, which only works with the drivers door and the ignition barrel too i've just discovered. gah you really do get what you pay for.

Not sure on the radio controls, but if the red button near the shifter is anything like the one on my Mark II, then is the shift lock button. On my car, when you put it into P and take the key out, the shifter is locked there. Pressing this button releases the lock (or starting it up and putting my foot on the brake).
