Default Where to measure on the flywheel to check what generation 1G i have?

    Hey guys,

Just double checking this because i am about to buy a clutch and dont want to buy the wrong clutch for my generation of 1G.

Now i was told this is where i measure?...not that i dont trust adan but just want to double check before i go ahead and order the clutch.

He said it will be 225mm accross there if its a gen II and 236mm if its a genIII

Mine came in much closer to 236mm so i assume is a gen III

The only reason i ask this question is because i always thought my car was gen II because of the ECU plugs

yes my car is running an auto ecu i found out? and its a factory manual?

Just making sure because i think ive heard before u can run a genIII flywheel and clutch setup on a gen II motor?

    Is that correct?

    Cheers guys.

That looks like a Soarer (?) Gen3 ECU. For some reason, they had the yellowish plugs, but the pin-count is the same as a Gen3.

You can run a Gen3 clutch/flywheel setup on either though, so long as you have all the matching bits.

OK so its a gen III ecu then...i though the gen III had grey plugs?

Where adan has pictured to measure? is that the correct place to measure?

While i cant see the pics, you will need to measure the shiny bit (pretty much the contact face of the flywheel) - that is what diameter people refer to.

As for your ECU, they can be changed and yours may have been while you didnt own it. Check the build plate and if it says W58 in the trans section then it will definitely be a factory manual.

The other identifier for 1G engines is the fuel injectors as i believe there was a time where Gen2 and Gen 3 engines had similar ECU plugs. I cant remember if you had checked yours but here is the info:

Another way to tell is by the location of the engine number (but again, that is assuming that it still has the original block)

The one in the pic is easiest to find, if its not here, its under the manifold and a pain in the ass to get to.
Though, i am not sure when the change was but i believe it to be Gen1/Gen2 under the manifold and Gen3 near the bellhousing.

But as JCMO said, if you have a matching flywheel and clutch, then it doesnt matter what generation it is.

Ok cool so where adan is telling me to measure is correct thanks adan and paul

So it appears my flyhwheel is gen III...

Yeh mate my buildplate reads W58 which means factory manual

ahhh ok so the gen III could have yellow plus still?

here is a picture of my injectors

    yellow or lime green?

    im not sure...

But still i think mine is a gen III flywheel then.

They're lime green, as per my previous post, you definitely have a Gen3 ECU setup. It can be confirmed by the absence of a ballast resistor for the injectors in the bay.

I think technically you could run a smaller clutch on the bigger flywheel anyway. It would just have the 11mm of unused material? Anyone done this?

As for clutches, the best and easiest to buy i could find when i was looking were either extreme or exedy clutches, though im not making any crazy power or anything..

Do you mind me asking what prices you found for the higher end clutches? I havent looked, so would be nice to know what i'm up for in advance.

I'll need a bloody good clutch (and a new flywheel for that matter) for my new engine.
