I would agree with you, but there are some tight bastards out there.Originally Posted by CrUZida

If you are looking for a serious race setup, the one he uses in his own car may be of interest to some.
Factory flexplate, only used for ring gear for starter
Tilton triple place 5 1/2 inch clutch
custom flywheel just large enugh to fit clutch.
Very similar to this pic I posted in another thread, around $1,500 NZD but not very streetable.
CD is for scale.

This is the prototype of the kit that Neil at RUSH Imports is doing.
Should be up and running in his Soarer by Easter.
It's designed to maintain/use the standard pull type R154 clutch on a supplied custom billet flywheel
I'll know more once the prototype is thoroughly tested and costed out.

Do you know what pricing will be like with this kit? And also, will it be availible for W series boxes?
Also, is it possible to turn an auto flywheel into a manual one by affixing a friction surface to it? Doesn't seem like the wisest idea, just wondering if it's been done...
Cheers, RM.
I agree, I don't think some people understand how bad it is for the flywheel to die at 7000 rpm !!Originally Posted by CrUZida

Yes, it should work with a W5x box, but only if you have a JZ bellhousing on it.
Should also work with a V160 too.
And don't even think about it.

When an adapter plate is used, how is the extra space adjusted for between the input shaft and crank?
Is it a simple matter of the input shaft splines being long enough to accomodate a plate? Are other spacers required? Putting a spacer between the crank and flywheel would seem easiest, since the clutch slave is usually on the gearbox side, however that wouldn't leave the starter motor in the wrong place?
There is no extra space.
Mr Toyota gracefully made at the JZ bellhousings ~20mm shorter than every other bellhousing, and extended the back of the block to compensate.
This means you can use a 20mm adaptor plate and everything lines up perfectly.

See the pic I posted above, its exactly what that is and race tested on an Atlantic spec 4AGE to over 10,000rpm. However note the friction surface is bolted to the crank along with the flexplate.Originally Posted by mullett

Just to update, the inserts to fit a triple or double plate tilton 7.25" clutch are now being sold for NZ$330. Pretty good option if you were going for a serious clutch anyway.
