Default Intermittent Wheel Wobble @ 78kph onward

    Heyz Dudez'z

Been a while since i asked some q's as i know my cars back the front almost now.

The mark II has had issues regarding wheel wobble since i put the work VS-XX wheels on.

Initially i thought the issue was with the Shit ass 8mm spacers that were installed
on the coilovers in japan which were these :
    (left of pic)

So they were removed, and to do so i had to remove my whole rotor etc etc
as the original studs on the hub/rotor were chopped
and once spacer was removed they would be unuseable.

So i replaced everything with my std (50,000kms) GX81 rotors and 5mm slip on spacers i bought from malz

    the wobble continued.

to explain the wobble better imagine this:

you entering the freeway , driving fine all the way up to ~77 - 80kph,
then the wheel starts wobbling like really quickly, you continue to accel up to speed limit 100kph and you notice the wheel wobble has gone , but then ,
2 seconds (100m up the freeway more) it returns , then fades in and fades out and fades in and fades out.

i think its the wheel balance/tyre balance due to the stretched tyres , so i go into bridgestone to get them re-checked.

every wheel on car is perfectly balanced

i then get a $90 - 2.5hour wheel alignment to make sure toe/camber/castor etc etc is all 100% fine.

    It is.

I go for another test drive

same issue, wheel wobble fades in and out and in and out every
couple o' hundred metres it will occcur and then another couple o' hundred
it will dissappear only to return again in another couple o' hundred.

Now at this point i have no fucking idea whats causing it,
so ive been doing my best to ignore it,
but quitting smoking is killing me and little things are agitating me , this is one of them.

My next test is to remove the Works and throw on some low offset AVS' wheels without spacers to test if its the spacers causing the issues.

    but

if anyone has any more suggestions , please please please let me know

how much runout in the tyres?

put it on the balancing machine and see how much up and down deviation there is per rotation.

the tyre vibration is probably getting close to a resonance condition causing what you feel

sometimes the camber of the road while enhance/dull the effects of the vibration if the tyre is out of round on the inside or outside only

    Wheel bearings?

Tried rotating your tyres to see if the vibration moves to a different corner?

MWP wheel bearings , when broke , can be heard, and this wobble is not audable.

    Brett : tyres are fine

that still doesnt answer what i was asking

just because the retard at the tyre shop says they are fine doesnt mean they are round.

the rotor from a 13B is balanced but not round. reckon you might feel something if you used one of these for a wheel?

put the tyre in a balancing machine, spin slowly,

hold a screwdriver 1mm from the tyre surface. if the gap closes and opens as the tyre rotates then you have runout.

i honestly dont know what amount of runout is acceptable but this is probably something you can find if you search enough.

my guess would be that >3mm is bad. take this with a grain of salt though. anything more then 6mm is definately bad

the runout may be different on the inside compared to the outside

A tyre flat spot will also be evident at some speeds more than others.

Sounds like something is not balanced -- Wheels may be OK but what about hubs and spacers?
You can get a flywheel balanced so maybe get them to balance the spacers and see what happens.

    Hey buddy,
If you can try put some stock rims that you know are balanced on and see if it is still there. I actually had a similar issue with my GX81 chaser after i did a 1JZ conversion on it. It actually turned out to be the Tail shaft not being balanced correctly. Mine did it over 80 aswell but didnt come and go it stayed there. Just a thought!!!

A lot of X80 chassis cars ive driven seem to have this problem including my own , acctully many mcpherson strut, steering racked cars that i have driven do this despite new tyres/rims/and other work.
I think a lot come from tyres not truly round as on my Cressida it seems to go away after a few hours driving but will still wobble at higher klm like 150 klm.

are your wheels hubcentric? with most aftermarket jap wheels the bore is to big for a standard hub, so you need to get a hub locator ring to to ensure the wheels fit up hubcentric...

otherwise the wheels will not be completely centered. and hence.. the wobble over 80kms.

Not exactly, if wheels have the angled wheel nuts they will center the wheel as they are tightened.
