I'll tell ya on the weekend after I'd got it running. The head itself is on, but nothing else that goes on it is. Not going to be any boostage for the first 500km, man that is going to kill me

Yeah, that's it, no boosting till after the re-torque. It's painful. Good luck getting it all back together and the nerves after the first kick over after it's all together.

The hardest bit is over, removing the bolts. Should go back together a whole lot easier because i'm not trying to remove something that's seized.

That doesn't explain why the GE had just as many problems if the GTE was supposed to have its own torque value.

BOTH the GE and GTE should have been at 72ft-lbs,

The rumour of the "good old typo from Toyota" seems like total BS to me.

The 5MGE was 58ft-lbs though (according to TSRM, most ppl do 72 though).

All this talk about different torque values for 7MGE and 7MGTE has got me slightly worried. I know the GTE manual is in Japanese, but does it definetly say 47ft-lbs for the 1GGTE too?

The japanese manual doesn't actually say 47ft-lbs, but it does say 650kg-cm which is also shown in the english manual along with the 2 other values.

Have a look at the 2 links which are the corresponding pages in each the english and tha japanese. Then you can judge for yourself.

I'll probably leave it at 47ft-lbs and then up it to 50 at the first retorque.

Thats what I was thinking when I read 64Nm and 47ft/lb for the 1G. However by that logic if the 7M should be 72Nm then theres going to be HGs blowing all over the world when people start doing that!

58 ft/lbs is the 7MGE rate, not the GTE rate (68-72 ft/lbs something in between there), whether or not the mechanic that told me this is full of shit or not, is yet to be seen, as he did say that the A/C line he snapped off when he did my HG was caused by my broken engine mounts

also, Nathan, the 1G seems to be as popular as the 7M when it comes to BHG, talking about properly done ones, the factory cock-up was bain of 7M...

anyway, in short 7M = teh win, 1G = teh lose.

So 4 1G's blow their head gaskets after being boosted, yet almost every single 7m blows its HG, even N/A factory cressida items that have never been thrashed.
