4AGTE. smallest and lightest and will do that power reliably, easily, and parts are easy to get. (top chain guides for 3TG?)
CA18 will be more torque as it is large displacement, but.. aren't they tractor motors?![]()
I have a ta22 Celica and i have a few engine conversion options presented to me.
Before i go into detail about what im looking for around 150 rwkw and most importantly be reliable. I've got a idea of what brake upgrade and suspension i will require for this conversion.
1. 4AGZE i know someone who wants to sell me there complete package which was in a ae71. It comprises of 4agze motor (coil pack) of a mr2, t50 sprinter box, extractors, 3inch exhaust with a cannon vl fuel pump, surge tank etc... everything is there to get the motor running not shore about the kms but it was running perfectly. Its a very good price.
2. 3TGTE from Leeroy's has custom exhaust manifold with a decent size turbo. Bolts up to the stock ta22 gearbox.
3. CA18DET yes i know its a nissan but there so cheap the engine gearbox package and at approximately 180rwkw with just upgraded turbo. FMIC and run stock ecu. No not a sr20det there bigger in dimensions compared to ca18det. Custom tailshaft required.
I want to be a toyota purist so i had initially set myself towards a 4agze then 4agte setup.
Then i saw the ease and power the ca18dets are putting out i thought why not. Then Leeroys package came up for sale, changed my mind again. Then i worry about in the future or even know sourcing parts for the 3tgte such as water pump, gaskets, etc.
So now im really confused as which one to choose and i really want it to be reliable.
thanks heaps and appreciate your input.

my favourite is a 3tgte or a turbo 2tg because there is minimal butchering and still has the old schoolness feel to the ride
ca18det is nice too cost u a bit of money but will probably have similair output to a 3tgte i think correct me if i am wrong, but the ca18det has heaps of replacement parts and easy bolt on upgrades.
A 3sgte is unreal cost a shit load more though lol put that into ur car dude
cya
CA18 Pros:
-Very compact because of the Iron bottom end
-Has a crank girdle
-Has a great head (Combustion chamber is very similar to the 4AGE,)
-Can be made better by using solid lifters.
-Direct Valvetrain activation (cam on bucket)
-Parts availability / aftermarket support (not quite up to the standard of the SR but still dam good
-Rev happy
-8-Port head aids bottom end torque and makes on boost transition more progressive (basically increased bottom end torque)
-Flashable computer
The 2t turbo and 3t turbo are nice aswell but im after aftermarket parts support and also toyota genuine and its hard to find it. The 4agze is good for parts and i can source pretty much any part for the engine.
im pretty sure sr20s are too lols they are light truck motors back in japan but when they get shipped to australia they become fully sick yoOriginally Posted by oldcorollas

what gearbox will you run with the 4AGTE? W series? T50 at 150rwkw might be ok but...
how does the nissan box compare in terms of feel and cost?

I think the ca18det is a much more practical and more cost effective approach then any of the toyota engines in this ball park!
+ Ebay mani, ebay turbo, ebay wastegate and ecu, and you will easily have your 150rwkw with room to spare...
On that note, not even i could kill a ca18they are very rev happy i found..

The nissan gearbox is quite strong handle well over 200rwkw and take abuse aswell.
Ive driven a s13 with a ca18det with garret rs turbo tuned 220 rwkw and it felt great, no dramas.
The nissan ca18det package is cheap aswell and replacement motors are plenty. You can pick up a engine/ gearbox package complete with loom and ecu for 2k no worries.
sounds like you have decided already
but depends on your ultimate goal.
4A will do 200rwkw, but will not do it as easily as the CA will.. plus you need W box for that (probably)

I vote 4AGTE. I've been involved in building one, such a good engine. Aftermarket support, cheap, smooth & reliable.
go with 4agte/4agze these engines love to rev, great powerband, small and light.
buy a ca18 and youll have to search nissan club forums for parts(not advisable)

I have a hot fours mag with your celica in it with a 6 cylinder turbo from a supra in it. depends on how far you want to modify it, ... But that car was mad as
the reason i would go 4agte is to stick to the toyota family line of engines.
might have to go ca18det and get a modified rocker cover which says toyota twin cam![]()
noone mentioned anything about the 3t tho ? guessing the 4agte and ca18det are significantly favoured.
Not so common in the 22s due to the tighter space. Common in 23's and 28s though...Originally Posted by 88FOUR
I still vote CA18det, if anything goes wrong, how easy is it to swap out a replacement..! 4agte goes wrong, hunting down one can take time, hunting down a good one is another ball game!

EDIT: Why not sr20? In nsw you fit inside the weight restriction..?! + SR20 is going to surpass all options and plays in the same field as the 3sgte, only it makes power alot cheaper and easier![]()
