Default Anyone calibrated a Stewart warner Speedo and Should I go darker than legal Tint?

i'm currently trying to calibrate my SW speedo, Have a w series box with a 3 wire sender, all wired up and works with a drill attached to the sender, but not when i go for a drive?

The destructions say to set it in cal mode and then drive 1 mile, then press cal buttojn again - nothing happens?

Are the instructions wrong ? Do i need to puch button again once in Cal mode?

Yes my wiring is correct and the guage is serviceable.?

    Thanks.

just got the old tint taken off and the tint guy suggested a darker than legal tint for my car - i don't think my insurance will cover me if i'm in an accident - darker would look better but should i go with insurance safety?

I'd be very surprised if insurance refused to pay out because your tint is too dark.

Have you tried the drill at low speeds?
The drill will probably do in excess of 10,000rpm, where as the speedo at 60kph will only be expecting about 500rpm.

is the sender actually sending? ie, getting spun by the gearbox?

as for tint... can you afford the defect fines? if the tint resulted in you not seeing a car, and pulling out in front of it, then your insurer may have a leg to stand on.
surely a tinter offering illegal tint is dodgy?
darker looks better from outside.. maybe.. but harder to see at night from inside.. why not just go with darkest legal good quality tint?

edit: insurance company may still haev to pay in the end.. but why give them grounds to drag out a claim process and possibly have it taken to court... when you KNOW it is "wrong"....

You won't find a tinter in Australia that doesn't offer illegal tint.

As they can't give you a receipt (coz they can't legally sell it), therefore you have to pay in cash, which means it doesn't go on the books and therefore they don't pay tax.

standard 35% tint does sweet fark all in my opinion, ive always had darker then legal, never had a problem.....have been pulled up by the police many times, RBTs,...and the like and my tint has never been mentioned, (though i have never been through a full defect station either)......

    just my eperience with tint.

and then, going 25% is different to going 10%, or 5

i think that everyone should go "one shade darker" than legal because then the cops will think thats the norm.

then anyone who actualyl wants to go darker can go "2 shades darker than legal" and still be only 1 shade over the limit.

    a 1 shade darker tolerance?
often the laws are set so it works like that anyway..

The 'Midnight Express' tint is actually pretty dark and looks darker than it is, but is legal.

This is a very good thing to check.

I.e. Chock front wheels, jack rear of car, put gearbox in neutral, take electronic speed sender off and confirm that bit electronic speedo sender connects to spins when wheels spin...

When i accelerate the guage moves but only to about 20km/h, even if i'm doin well over 60km/h, this is only works before i attempt cal, after i attempt the cal the digital / trip display moves up but not the needle.

As for the tint i'm going with legal, everything else is legit on the car - i think having illegal tint would just play on my mind.

    cheers everyone.

long shot, work out how many revs the sender will do for "1 mile" (from your tyres/ diff, and gearbox output gearing), then stick it in drill and turn that many turns, and calibrate it.. then put on car.. should at least be kinda close.

does the sender produce enough pulses per mile for the cal to work?

tried that, and gauge accepts anywhere between 4000 and 200 000 pulses - so you would think it would be in the middle somewhere - ill swap senders out this weekend and rewire it again, really giving me the shits as i'm about 2 weeks from engineering and it is one of the last things to do.
