Carbon/kevlar, when laid up in the conventional way, is not that much lighter than chopped strand. But it's stronger. I did mine using a vinyl ester resin to keep it supple and reduce the shrinkage of normal polyesters. I retain the standard hinges from a donor bonnet, and use 3 bonnet pins up front.
I had an engine fire not long after fitting the thing and it suffered a bit, but it's fine for racing.
To make one for road use would probably need another layer or so to be more rigid.
expensive.

Thanks Laurie. No more road use for me![]()
Do you have any pics of the bonnet?
Probably just end up with fibreglass anyway then.
Thanks
Chris
Chris,
There were some pics on the old toymods site under "soarer ready for sandown" taken when the car was rebuilt after the calder smash. In some ways carbon/kevlar is easier than chopped strand to layup, so don't be daunted by it. It just aint cheap.
I can email you some pics of the bonnet and mould if you're really interested.

mate, the stock seats are heavy even in a rolla. the tar paper on the floor and the firewall insulation removal will give you an easy 40-60kg but will make it noisy and hot. the front seats will be easy 50-70kg each. The glass is very heavy so if you are just doing drag replace it if the rules allow. This should bring you close to 1200. Remmeber 1200 without a cage is as good as my old fella at protecting you, when you take away the things that have been put together as a whole to protect you in the standard car.Originally Posted by cptsideways

There was a video somewhere where some guys had a lancer (i think, or a corolla)... stokc in every way. They stripped it to basically nothing but the engine and a seat... purpose was to make it a 10second car... i think they got down to 12s? Anyways, if you can find that video they'll show you a lot of stuff you can get rid of![]()

........thanks Huy, looks a little different in engine bay now, full 3 ltr plus new turb and manifold. More mumbo too!

Dead thread revival.
I had my GZ20 to 1250kg race weight.
Stripped interior, retained dash, console, door trims and front section of roof lining.
Recaro type R reclining drivers seat on custom rail. GA70 passenger seat.
No air con or fan, removed air con pump, condensor and shit. Removed PS pump and lines from engine.
3" exhaust, second hand off a supra.
Removed all sound deadening... I reckon a good 30-40kg in there... filled a garbage bag.
Aftermarket struts and springs.
Removed front and rear bumper steel bars.
So umm... not too hard to get down to a reasonable weight... and realistically could be turned back to a street car at the drop of a hat by putting interior back in and re-adding the aircon and fan setup.
But doing all that would just be homo when I have a stock manual gz20 in the driveway with black interior and all that street car type stuff in it waiting for one of the spare 1jz-gte's to find their way in...
Moo
Apparently I was advertising in my signature, where I just thought I was helping out others... so if you want to know how to get more steering lock in your A70/Z20 Supra/Soarer, you'll just have to search, don't ask me, apparently I'm not allowed to tell you.
Well in addition to removing everything!!! I've also no gone the whole hog & removed the wiring loom well anything that was'nt needed for a road car. Just engine loom & basics like oil & water temps.
Interestingly under the front bulkead there a second ally panel behind which is another 15kg of sound deadening.... now gone- Just leaves the main bulkhead in place.
I've also deleted the subframe mounts, the whole set of bushes & all weighs 15kg & once removed you can drop the car on the subframe 1cm approx for better ride height & geo![]()
The front subframe also weighs shitloads, I plan to fit a modified Z30 subframe which is all ally, you can pick it up with one hand it weighs about 20kg compared to the 50-60kg of the original steel one.
My calculations are looking to be just over 1100kgs !
