its on from pretty much idel if you use full throttle
and switches off around 6

you are thinking of vvti my sheep shagging brethren the silvertop vvt is on at x rpm and off at y rpm, throttle makes no difference

VVTi alters the timing a variable amount
VVT a set amount, its basicly a switch, on or off.
in the 4ages its determined by load/throttle/engine temp etc
ten mins with a VVT light hooked up will show you that once the temp gauge has reached 1/4 heat anything over half throttle is enough to switch it reguardless of the RPM.
infact its pretty much impossible to drive the car with out activating it.
some ppl have said the preface lift ae101s had an RPM based VVT, but mine was preface lift and it wasnt like that. maybe the very first version of it was, but i dont have a list of ECU p/n changes anymore so im not sure when that was likely to be.

Speaking to someone who works at toyota recently - They said for all cars up to and including vvt function they use a 20w-50 multipurpose. vvti is different...

Do you mean "all cars up to and including VVT-i function they use a 20w-50 multipurpose. VVTL-i is different..."?

I thought the VVT and VVT-i engines use the same oil?

yes, the pulley moves by different amounts. as for switching parameters, iv only ever tested silvertops. all the ones i tested most definitely were not RPM switched
