Default What does the Water to Air I/C computer in a 1GGTE do / control

Well my 1ggte (gen 1) has only 1 fault code, -no signal to water to air I/c computer-

this is because i don't have one - have a front mount. I bought the engine as a package and it didn't come with one.

I have all the wiring diagrams and they mention nothing about a WTA i/c computer and the ECU from what i can gather has no input for it?

Does anyone know what the WTA I/C CPu does and where it sends the signal?

As the engine runs great, but doesn't like low gears ( has no go unttil it gets moving and then it goes great) and has 1 fault i believe this could be causing my issue.

Any info on the gen1 WTA I/C CPU would be great.

    Thanks rosie.

    That is a good question.

I'll take a wild guess but I think it must restrict the flow of water to the Intercooler while the engine is still cold until it warms up.

I think there are only a few things it can do, either measure water temperature, air temperature or control water flow.

How about does anyone run a front mount on their 1GGTE gen1, without any adverse effects?

I don't think there will be any affects on running a front mount inter cooler on a gen 1 1g-gte.

From what I have seen the Water to Air I/C was an option for the 1GGTE Gen1 & was discontinued in later models, (Guessing) the WTA I/C computer would have modulated the control valve based on which temp was Cooler, so while on boost the value would open (to Cool the air) and close while off boast (to prevent the air heating ).
As the water temp would run around 90C an Air to Air would offer better performance as the air temp should not get above 35C to often.
What error code are you getting & are you trying to clear the fault?

code 54, and yeah i'd like to clear it - doubt it is causing my issue but still want it gone.

    Cheers rosie.

    Gidday

I have never had a look at the Gen1 water to air system, bur picking up Auto351's point my experience with these systems elsewhere has been that they are not a part of the engine cooling syustem and have their own plumbing and radiator. They would not run at 90 deg C - the following would seem to confirm this.

Engine error code 34 is telling you that (WTA) - water temp is > 70c and high turbo boost has resulted in fuel cut (note this signal may appear instead of error code 31. This is out of my Japanese lamgiage 1g-gteu/1g-gzeu engine manual. The diagnostic table was translated by one of my Japanese staff. There may be more info but as I was not needing it I did not pursue the WTA option

That would make more sense to have a separate radiator for the I/C as the working temp would be lower that the engine operating temp, but this would make the system very complex needing a separate water pump & radiators.

There's still the question of what the WTA computer does.

    Rosie

No 34 is what I have stated.

No 54 Intercooler computer - No signal received from water intercooler computer. Suggests that you lookj at 1. Intercooler computer circuit or 2. Intercooler computer or 3. ECU.

    Cheers Craig

Looking at the Water To Air intercooler, it has an electric motor to circulate the water and a level switch in the top of the intercooler.

I would think the WTA doesn’t do much.

    1) It most likely controls the speed of the water pump , to prolong its life, running low speed or stopped when off boost and water temp below 70C & Highs speed when on boost or temp > 70C
    2) It would also signal to the ECU the condition of the system, (just looking how simple the airflow meter & throttle positioner are) the most likely signaling method would be a voltage via one of the A/D inputs the ECU.

All that’s needed to clear the error code maybe a resistor network across that input on the ECU.

If any one was luck enough to down load the wiring diagram from www.sixworks.com.au before it closed I would like to get a copy.

Yeah mate i know it is as easy as sending a signal to the ECU, but I have no idea to which pin, i only have 2 maybe 3 spare wires and i'm not a big fan of randomly placing earth / voltage into my ECU.

Ditto on the sixworks manual / diagrams.

    Thanks Rosie.

    Rosie,

How are you going with this?

I was reading some unrelated post and this Indicated a few maps exist inside the ECU one of these is used when the system detects a sensor fail and is the way the ECU protects the Engine. (less performance)

Also mentioned the ECU commumicates with external devices using PWM, ( changing square waves duty cycle), if this it true then a simple resistor network will not work.
