R154 box noisy in gear? what has gone wrong?

The noise occurs while with the old oil in there, I thought I'd change to new redline oil would fix the problem. After oil changed, the noise still there so I got it rebuild.

The spigot bearing did not collapsed, it spins freely and in good condition (it is a bitch to get it out though ). And I also replaced it with a new spigot bearing with the new clutch.

My concern is, could it be the gear sets are worn which causing the noise?
Is it bad if I change to thicker oil? it might reduce the noise but would it hurt anything else?

didn't you replace the oil a couple of weeks before the rebuild?

have you checked the condition of the spigot bearing in the crank? if your Gbox guy did replace all bearings and set the box up correctly you should have zero noise, but if the spigot bearing has collapsed slightly it will be putting load on the input shaft bearing and layshaft that they probly dont want to see thus the reason for a still noisy box.

the fact that it only does it when hot would be the oil viscocity when cold versus when warm.

What is a flywheel bearing? or do you mean the spigot/plot bearing?
It was still in good condition, I replaced it with a new one with the new clutch kit.

I had the same problem, had a small noise to start off with and some thrashing caused it to get louder which ended up with a fucked gearbox.

Cause was that the flywheel bearing had decided to collapse. Had the same symptoms when you put the clutch to the floor noise went away.

Its probally just worn gears with age and klm , It wont affect any performance just be a bit noisy . A very broad example a W58 lasts about 500000klm driven normally and 250000klm driven hard , they are generally throw away material after that as the gears are worn out.
With some of the W,G and R boxes made after about 2000 depending on the factory/plant ( guessing) that they were made in some noisy from new with gear whine.

I will just have to change to thicker oil, maybe it will reduce the noise abit. It is very annoying with the windows up.

Well if you run oil thats to thick, then it might not lubricate properly!

But maybe start with adding a additive that will thicken it only when its hot or somethign? I think thats what they do But i know some people on here that have run additive to get rid of noise and its fixed or at least minimised there problem!??

Was driving home, at night very quite. I notice that every times the clutch is depress, the whining noise is significantly slowly reduced and that is while moving.
At stationary in neutral, you'd rev it and the noise increase, but if the clutch is depress, the noise slowly disappear?

Stressing over this, I've spent over $1200 and still not fix the whining noise problem, driving me crazy.

Will took the advice and might change to a thicker oil or add some additives and see how it goes.

Yeah, I am inclined to believe it is either thrust washer or input shaft bearing.
At the moment I am still driving it )

can i just ask how long have you had the car?
also wen you pull up at a set off lights do you leave your foot on the clutch leaving the whole mechanism going ?

Wen my mate bought his rb25 halfcut and put it in his vl he had the same sought of noise after inspection it was revealed that the thrust washer (And input shaft bearing i think) had been heated up and collapsed causing the crank casing to warp from the previous owner constanly being on the clutch wen stoped etc.
could be a similar problem

Gearbox has full rebuild, all the old parts are still in good condition. Thrust washer are still good, input bearings, shaft bearing, syncro, the lots has taken out and is still in good condition but replaced it with new parts anyway.

The only things left that have not been replace are;

clutch release bearing hub (and 4 x washers, 2 x snap ring), clutch fork, clutch fork holding pin and GEAR SETS.
But I can not think of how it can cause such noise?

And then there the possibility that the gear set could be worn, oil does not lubricate as well when it is hot hence only noisy after 10 min driving.

I think that any gears that are making noise while not under a load when it is sitting there idling in neutral, will make a Lot More noise when under a load. Bearings would have less of a change between unloaded & loaded, so I think that your noise is still coming from the bearings, and that they have not been replaced.

Major update: PROBLEM FIXED!

after spending over $1000, new clutch and got the box rebuild, but the noise still there.
The problem was something really stupid and confusing.

Anyway, what I did was put about 2mm spacers to lower the gearbox mount. Noise completely gone!!! It was part of trail and error and it works.
