I had a similar problem with my rb20 gearbox. That ended up being a input bearing. Be careful though - mine collapsed VERY quickly causing the damage to be terminal.

Yeah, I am inclined to believe it is either thrust washer or input shaft bearing.
At the moment I am still driving it cos it is my daily.

Next question: any good recommended shop to rebuild it? Sydney! price I'll be expecting?
or any toymoders has done it before? I want to save some coins here, on a budget! I will get the overhaul bearing kits for R154, and who can open it up and change it for me? with FEES ofcourse. I am happily to bring the box to you
    .
If worse or too expensive, I will just have to go back to auto

What did the magnet look like, grey clay, the alps, big, small? Bearings can whine & whirr for a long time, continuously getting louder, but one that makes clanks/clunks, sharp loud sudden noises, is a bearing that is coming apart and will probably soon fail - and maybe take out a lot of other parts with it.

The sync's 1->5 and the sync hubs 1&2, 3&4 and 5th should be exactly the same as they were before the noise started. They may not be made out of 'gold bits' so you won't see'em, or they've settled on the bottom & you wouldn't see'em unless the trans bottom sludge was hot & churned before draining.

I d put my money on the input shaft bearing whatever the case id do something sooner than later because it ll do shaft damage if left too long

    Updating...

I have had my R154 rebuild, with all new bearings, seals, syncro.
Bought new R154 rebuild kits from the state, got it installed by a gearbox specialist.

The gearbox specialist said there is nothing wrong that he could see with the gearbox. Bearings, thrust washer are still in good condition.
I bought new exedy clutch kit, machined the flywheel.
Got it all installed, but the noise is still there.

the funny thing is, the noise only comes on after about 10-15 min of driving.
Every morning, it is like a dream, so perfect.

I am pretty sure it is from the gearbox.
Noisy even in neutral stationary, but if I put in gear and step on the clutch, the noise is gone. And it is noiser with rev+. While the car is moving, noisy in gears even neutral, neither the clutch in or out.

And I notice that, in the morning, my speedo is not working, until sometime later.
I bought new speedo gear from Toyota.

I am puzzle. Has anyone experience anything similar?

    cheers,

    Are you using same oil?

If the oil warms up, it thins out! Perhaps its an acceptable weight when cold, and gets a bit thin when its warm! Try adding an additive or a thicker oil maybe??

    Tried 2 different oils.
First oil was CastraL? SAE 70-95, at the moment it has new REDLINE superlight shock proof oil SAE 75-90.
Plus, that same oil was used for 12 months without any noise?

Could I have starve it with oil and have worn out the gears?
I did spilled abit of oil while changing new speedo gear to fix speedo problem. while still driving on it before the noise occur.

But if the teeth on the gears are worn, should it be noisy all the time? not just when it is hot?
While inspecting the gearbox, the gearbox guy said the gears shown no signs of wears.
and the Magnetic thing has very little residue of metals on them.

Speedo cable? Its a long shot but a half stuffed mechanical cable is bound to cause issues randomly, and hence the noise to go with it.

But if its doing it while in neutral, clutch out then it cant be speedo drive!

Its something in the bellhousing at my geuss, as it stops when the clutch is engaged. But does the input shaft stop spinning when the clutch goes in and the car is stationary/neutral???

It is electronic speedo, with new speedo gear.

It is defineatly a whining noise, not rattle or cause by loose dangling parts.

The only things I have not replace

    clutch fork

    fork support with springs

    and clutch release hub kit

but I dont see how these things can cause a loud whining noise, and only when it is hot?

My last stab in the dark would be the speedo gear assembly itself

will try to replace that, and see how it go.

I had the same problem, had a small noise to start off with and some thrashing caused it to get louder which ended up with a fucked gearbox.

Cause was that the flywheel bearing had decided to collapse. Had the same symptoms when you put the clutch to the floor noise went away.

didn't you replace the oil a couple of weeks before the rebuild?

have you checked the condition of the spigot bearing in the crank? if your Gbox guy did replace all bearings and set the box up correctly you should have zero noise, but if the spigot bearing has collapsed slightly it will be putting load on the input shaft bearing and layshaft that they probly dont want to see thus the reason for a still noisy box.

the fact that it only does it when hot would be the oil viscocity when cold versus when warm.

    cheers
