will see if my gx81 has one
and take some pics if it does
cheers
When I got my car it had the JZX81 rack and PS pump, steering was quite heavy as I didn't have the solenoid hooked up.
Hooked it up to 12V and it was WAY too light, could turn the wheel with no effort at all.
Sourced a Crown (UZS131??) PS computer and hooked it up to the speed signal and rack, now I have speed sensitive power steering in my MX83/JZX83![]()

Where is this solenoid located in a jzx81? I have a jzx81 rack and the steering is heavy so I suspect that it hasn't been wired up.
Also,
anyone know if the rack mount bushes are the same between mx83 and jzx81 as I need some and wondering if I can get Cressi ones. And what is involved in the process of a steering rack recondition? Would they do this?
Thanks
Chris
to reco the rack they replace the seals in the 'input shaft' (i think its called) and replace the rod ends and rubber boot things.
i had to get mine done because it was leaking all over the place. i dunno how hard it is but at pedders they have a cut away model of a rack and it doesnt look that hard to do by yourself.

They charge $600 to reco a rack.
The 'seal kit' cost $30.
That should show you how labour intensive it is.

The solenoid is in the valve body of the steering. Should be a 2 wire plug coming out of it, near where the steering shaft comes down. I have mine disconnected and love it. Much better than loose as steering.
Rack reco they disassemble completely, replace the internal seals on the rack (what leaks when fluid is coming out of the boots), new seals in the valve body, new bearings on the pinion, set the preload on the pinion bearings and the rack guide, new rack ends and new rack boots.
Not overly hard, definitely not east. You need the correct tools, and the manual to know how to set preload etc. For the price the kit would be with the rack ends, bearings etc, I'd be getting a reco rack.
They don't supply new rack bushes. Not sure if JZX81 and MX83 ones are the same.

Big solenoid looking thing hanging off the rack.
Maybe not all JZX81's had it, or maybe you have a GX81 rack which may not have it.

found itFixed the rubber bushes though and it feels good now. It definitely isn't plugged in but I think I will leave it as is anyway. May try it out at some stage I guess?
dont leave it unplugged youll stuff it in no time, especially if you drifting
why? and no drifting for me![]()
Its a regulator, its designed to be run at both extents, i see no reason why it would stuff anything up.
