I have jzx81 rack in my car, it has a pressure sensor? where as speed goes faster, the steering gets harder.
I am not sure if a normal mx83 have such? check for any unplug plugs on the driver side in the bay just below the strut.
hey guys, i`ve got a 1jz powered cressy and the steering is super light, ie it has no feel and i think possibly the pump pumping too much pressure into the steering rack. it is a standard 1jz pwr steer pump. Is there anyone else who has the same issue and is there a way to fix it????
cheers!![]()

MX83's didn't come with progressive power steering. JZX81's have a ECU and a solenoid valve on the rack to reduce the assistance once up to speed.
PlacentaJuan on here has had some success with a smaller diameter pressure hose to the rack. You lose full assist at low speeds this way too though.

yea check out some of my threads i spent a long time fucking around with this.
after my first power steering line started leaking i put a double size restrictor in and that made no difference.
after that one died i got a line made up in 1/4 ID and that made a big difference.
the power steering is still light enough for 1 handed highway cruising, but not so light that you lose all feel, its just about perfect (could do with a *little* bit more restriction but theres no way im going to fuck around with it more)
anyway keep an eye out for me at toyotafest and you can check it out.
i would post up pics on my thread but bigpond is being realyl gay at uploading to optus webspace.

I got a similar issue with my 1jz Mx83 where sometime the steering is super light and tracks heaps. I replaced steering rack all the bushes Ball joints, top plates and still having the issue.
Im going to replace the Damper soon, Ill let you know if that works.
by damper do you mean the flexi metal part that sits inside the hose?
some people call it a silencer also but if thats what you mean i had that changed to one about 2 times as long and it made no difference.

Sorry to hijack. This however interests me as i am attempting to use a 1jz power steering pump with AE86 power steering rack.... Interesting thread, may consider running smaller lines :d
Can anyone see a problem with using a possibly dimensionally smaller internal volume rack with a PS pump suited to a larger rack?
Kind Regards
Jeff
when i did a conversion for someone (1JZX83) i just powered the solenoid on the rack from an IGN source.
thats the "hard" setting but its perfect
hello
i think hes referring to the external dampener (gas/oil strut thing that bolts to the rack)Originally Posted by PlacentaJuan

series 2 doesnt have a damper.

Was the steering fine before the conversion ? If it was always pretty light ( as in lighter than normal ) the rack is the issue, possibly a fault with the torsion bar setup in the rack which controls fluid flow / pressure through the rack ..
I have never done this conversion or looked into it, but i was thinking why not adjust the pressure relief valve in the pump ? .. or change the pulley sizing, not easy i realise ..
With these restricters in the line, does anyone fit a bleed / return line near the restricter as i would think the build up in pressure in the line would be huge & the power drain on the engine with the pump pressure constantly high would not be a good thing either ?..
My 2 cents worth ..
Yes that correct series 1 Mx83 with the damper.Originally Posted by ae95
Do GX81's also have the variable power steering?
My chaser (gx81) didnt but it was only a 1gfe. can't rule out possibilty in 1ggeu/1ggteu vehicles.
Dont most PS pumps have an internal pressure releif valve?
