have to die grind the sides of the bucket retainers to make enough room for socket.
Can anyone give advise on a little problem i have concerning 1g head bolts. i have removed the head and had it polished and ported and bought a set of ARP studs. the studs fit fine when the head is back on there is not enough space to get a socket on to the nut to tighten it. the old system used bolts with a allen key head which was fine but i cant get bolts for a 1g here in the uk. I went for ARPstuds as im planning a single turbo and ecu upgrade and wasnt sure if standard bolts were up for the job, any feedback greatly appreciated as the spanners are about to go through the window shortly.
thanks davie

no you don't. there are sockets available that will fit.
1st ive heard of it. a socket any skinnier then the stock ones i dont think id want to hang off that much either.
STAHLWILLE make a thin wall aircraft quality socket that may help you.
either that or I can just machine one down in a lathe for you
7M heads have the same problem with ARP studs. A Stahlwille thin wall socket will fit, as well as a cheapo Kinchrome socket as I found out myself by luck.
Thanks for the advise guys , I managed to get a stock set which will do for now as i have decided to put the single turbo and ecu on hold as the financial situation over here is getting dodgy so iwill get a set of Stahlwille sockets and hopefully get it done next summer
ah dont be like that, I will machine one for you for free if you mail me or pay me to get a socket and then pay for the post
ta for neg rep. was only stating what i was told by 6boost, and what i had found myself.
may look into the Stahlwille then![]()
neg rep for that? thats harsh.
anyway, kincrome fits. and kincrome is cheap and sold singly, unlike stahlwille.
That sounds good, let me know how much and ilsend it on. Iv had different feed back with regards to this from you guys inOz and a few guys over here. bottom line is some say a ground down socket or stahlwillie will fit while others say the bucket retainers have to ground down. Having seen the head last week it i think i am in the grind down the buckets camp. Could there have been differant casts that might be a bit thicker ? or with there being 3 generations of the g series engine with differant compression ratios is it the same head for all?I will put a pic of the head next week when i get it back and measure the clearance i have for a socket, if anyone else has a head laying about it would be interesting to hear what clearance they have on theres. If therre are variations on clearance then everyone is correct but if there is no differance then iwill wait for Sams socket and the truth will be revieledOriginally Posted by Sam_Q

i had problems too with my 1J.
found out the hard way that you have to insert all the washers first, before dropping the head onto the studs, then there was the issue of my sockets being too big.
some cheapshit socket solved the issue.
i have a cheap kink-chrome set and nothing in it fits it, its close enough that its not funny though. Im guessing it could also be a gen related thing too, as the heads i have are gen 3 ones....
I might have a dig at repco and see if i can find a cheaper solution![]()
