That's the one, the Fuel Damper on the fuel rail is what he's talking about, if you wanna see a refernce to how such a thing causes this problem just check out the last page or two of my thread "3SGE No Acceleration".

It's a bitch of a thing to find as the cause of so much hassle isn't it Hydra.
Glad i could help you out though, beg my pardon but I'm happy to see i'm not the only one with a knack for stupid little things to go wrong. I have a bit of white smoke coming out of mine too, does yours go away after you run it for a bit? mine does after i run round the block a lil, but it's not just regular condensation because even on warm days it's still there after a while,i'm guessing valve stem seals for me cause the motor was sitting around unused for so long. let me know if you nut this problem out. could help me out too

Yeh mine was on top of the fuel filter, it might not have been on there correctly or something. Oh well, it's gone now, stupid thing.

The white smoke persisted after a small drive and there was coolant leaking out some somewhere at the back of the engine. No biggie - I have a few weeks leave from work so I should be able to nut this one out

    Huh?
The fuel pulsation dampener is normally on the rail and not on the fuel filter.
Given that you replaced your fuel filter and you didn't touch the fuel rail the filter is the more likely culprit, and generally should be replaced in a conversion as a matter of course

In 10 years and 30+ conversions (some of them with very dodgy engines) I've never heard of a faulty dampener.

the only time dampers i've heard of dampers being a problem is when the toothed washer is swapped out for a solid wasker, and not allowing fuel to pass thru.
if they fail, they might leak, but thats about it.
it's one of those things that everyone just assumes is installed correctly, not realising that all the fuel has to pass thru it, and that the washers are critical

check what washers you put on the damper.. and yeah.. fuel filter is weird place to put it, since it is to damp the pulsation from the injectors, not the fuel pump...

not the dampers fault.. installers fault

Haha well funny you say that - I didn't install it there! Came like that with the engine. Since that was the first time i've seen one of those little clear topped things I assumed it was in the right place. I guess what they say about assumptions is correct

The fuel filter that came with the engine was a new one too - just a generic one from Supercheap it seems. Sure, I could get the dampener thing back on the fuel rail buuut... it's working now, which is more than could be said for before.

can ya check the washers on the damper.. just for shits and giggles?
does it now have a regular banjo bolt on the fuel rail inlet instead of the damper?

    Sure

It was the damper, toothed washer, the rubber + metal washer, pipe thing, rubber+metal washer, fuel filter.

Just a regular banjo bolt now, yes.

    rubber+metal washer?

on the top of the banjo (which shoudl have the larger diameter toward the damper) there shoudl only be the toothed washer... unless that rubber+metal one has a larger inner diameter to allow fuel thru?

They have a metal outer washer, and there is rubber on the inside edge. It's pretty flexible rubber too - but it might have been incorrect for the application.

Oh well, I just care that it's working correctly now

ok i was getting confused because i kept reading 'attached to fuel rail' which its not. its attached to the block under the intake manifold but yes obviously has a fuel line connecting it to the fail rail.

so did this guys one fail or was it tampered with?

    Yeh thats the one!

I don't know what was wrong with it - quite frankly don't care much now It's working without it, and thats good enough for me.

Now, I have further problems. The intake manifold is loose it seems - whistling sounds until I put pressure on the plenum towards the head... so I'm gonna make sure the bolts are torqued up correctly. There is also a minor coolant leak - I assume there is coolant flowing between the head and intake manifold? I hope? That'll make fixing things easier (as I then have a good idea of whats causing both problems...)

coolant leaves the head and enters the electric idle control valve via a rubber hose. it then exits the valve and runs down to the stainless lines running parallel to the intake manifold, also via a rubber hose. it then enteres the throttle body via a rubber hose and exits the throttle body and returns to the head via a rubber hose.

i think there is a diagram floating around somewhere, but they are the only places coolant makes it way too on that side of the motor apart from the oil filter/cooler.
