Hot Rod - fair enough, that's a pretty particular car type
Custom Cars - This doesn't exclude Japanese cars, if they've been modified, which some have had extensive mods.
Some OST cars may be stretching to fit into those categories, but there are some that definitely do. And my argument is more the exclusion of some pretty good quality cars that rarely, if ever, get displayed is stupid. There will probably only be 1 RA28 in the entire 800 cars, while Geminis, Escorts and some others will almost certainly be represented in bigger numbers.
They'll be no shortage of Imprezzas, Silvias and Lancers too, so it's not just about V8 dominance.
The other facet to this is that clubs want to enter and show what their club is about. And by preventing the older/classic cars of OST we're effectively prevented from showing all buth the most highly modified examples. I think that's the problem, and perhaps they could almost look at giving clubs a certain size area where they can present the cars that best display what their club is about. I like seeing the various clubs on show, but some of the best examples of cars in OST are being repeatedly knocked back.

While I personally agree with pretty much everything you wrote there, the problem is that most people (outside of the Toyota community) still see all Toyota's as derivatives of a beige Camry (either that or rice).
With the exception of the later model Supra's, most people wouldn't be able to tell one Toyota from another, especially with the amount of imports in the last 5 years.
Another problem is that pretty much no Toyota has gained cult status yet. The rotary Mazda's, Datto's, Gemini's, Escort's, etc have all had cult status for years. The xA2x Celica is getting there, but I feel it still has some way to go.
As far as WRX's, Lancers and Silvia's/Skyline's go, well, I have no idea why they are so much more popular with people outside their respective communities. Other than possibly the fact that they are so much more common.
I think someone needs to write a book entitled 'How to acheive cult status outside your own car community' !

1.) Get a nice example into a showOriginally Posted by CrUZida
2.) Show it off like no tomorrow - throw it round the skidpan/grass, have different people riding in it all day... Drive it as much as you can at the show
3.) Rip massive skids at said car show...
4.) Show off that immaculate engine bay/interior/undercarriage
5.) PRAY it all works....
Well, thats a start to the book I hope... Anyways, as GeneSPIDA asked, has anyone organised any shade for the weekend or are we building a wall of tyres and rims to hide us from the sun? Anything else we should perhaps be organising...?

I think there's a few cult cars in the Toyota badge than just late model Supras. The xA2x Celicas definitely rate as cult cars around the world, and you'd be surprised how many people come check them out when they are on show. Especially when they're not the sheep in wolves clothing variety that Australia got stock, with some suitable mumbo. The Sprinter definitely is another, as the GT4 most probably is also, and there's some nice MR2s around. They've got as much cult status as Geminis at least.Originally Posted by CrUZida
As for shade, etc. nobody seems to have organised anything, so I might need to look into getting a cheap shade/pergola thing for either us or the car![]()
Did anyone have any OST or other gear from previously that we were going to use?
Damo, you pulled the pin, but anything OST you want displayed, etc?

Unfortunately, it sounds like he's withdrawn and gone a little MIA recently.
Is anyone camping? To my knowledge not. If there are, typically people have gone down and helped set things up on the Friday. Regardless, things like shade and cars left overnight are setup on Friday.
Assuming we have 6 cars, nobody staying overnight, but some gear to setup we could:
- Get there early Sat and setup (leave things setup Sat night?)
- Someone go down Friday to setup (I can only do that in the late afternoon)
The problem with leaving stuff if nobody's staying overnight is security and potential problems if wind blows stuff away, etc.
So, unless someone says they're staying overnight Fri/Sat, we may need to do early morning setups. I'll be travelling from Bayswater to pick my brother up from Orange Grove, and heading probably down Tonkin Hwy to Thomas St to link up with Anketell. Any suitable meet point that way?
An alternative is for me to go back to Roe Hwy and cut that way to South St and the Freeway. If that's preferred for a meet point, let me know also.
I'd say I'll be on the road quite early, especially if setting up is required.

Time to move on from my whining and get this show on the road. We've got some nice cars in the group, so let's try enjoy ourselves at the display and in the driving events that I know at least 3 of us have entered, if not more.
If those going want to get in contact, email me at [email protected] and I can provide phone number, etc.

Yes - sounds like early Sat morning is the go.
Those of us in the driving events also have to be scrutineered before we can participate (starts at 9am on Saturday).
I'm listed for Slalom & Go-whoa in the 10 - 11:30am Sat session, and Motorkhana, parkarama & car balance for the 10 - 11:30am Sun session.
The only shade I have to offer is a beach umbrella!
I'm assuming we can take our car & leave whever we want? I have a few family things to do this weekend so might be in & out a bit.
Should we just meet at the Motorplex front gate at 8am Saturday?
Regards
Peter

Looks like Gene has taken on the roll and being the more experienced entrant - most questions should be directed to him in my absence.
FYI - the final list of entrants for the OST display looks like this:
List Of Entrants:
. Gene - TA22 Celica - entry lodged confirmed
. Steve - RA28 Celica - entry lodged confirmed
. Pete - MA61 Supra - entry lodged confirmed
. Samantha - 90 Camry - entry lodged confirmed
. Mike (twiztd) - MX83 Cressida - entry lodged confirmed
a bit disappointing from what we had originally anticipated, but a nice variety of cars at least.
The only OST stuff I have for display is the big OST banners that you can hammer into the ground if you want to mark out your territory? Might be handy, otherwise it will just look like a small group of Toyota's with no affilication.
Someone will have to come past my place and collect them in Belmont tho (maybe Gene or Pete?)
I suggest you guys go down and set up on the Friday night, suss things out, those of you who can and who are camping the night. Saturday morning is always so hectic, peter, you might miss out on your driving events just cos of all the scruteneering and business.
As mentioned, I am no longer entered, so with no entry passes, I cant be the master of ceremonies. But hopefully you guys will work things out with the small crew you have there.
I will try and make it down over the weekend to see how things are going. Cant promise anything tho - will depend on how I feel health wise.
If you need anything desperately - most of you should have my mobile number.
Good Luck - have fun...

83 GA61 Toyota Supra XX [TRD 83] - 7MGTE Turbo-A inside
83 KE70 Toyota Corolla - the budget build
94 EF Ford Fairmont Ghia [FATFORD] - looks tough, goes slow
64 Chev Impala - west coast lowrider
Gates open at 7am, and given I don't believe anyone is camping overnight, I think that is about when I'll plan to get there (i.e. leave home by around 6am).
I too am in the first session of events that start at 10am, and will need to get to scrutineering from 9am.
So, I'm planning to help setup between 7am and 9am, with my brother being able to help while I'm being scrutineered if need be. Yes, it is busy Sat morning, but I don't think we have a choice, and being Top Side, it's probably less hectic up there.
Sammy, got your SMS, I'll reply soon. But if you can bring a BBQ on Sat that would be great, given your 5mins away.
I'll try organise to collect OST signage from Damo (probably tomorrow).
I will go see if I can find a shade thing (for the people moreso than the cars). Chances are it won't be huge though, just a cheapie from Bunnings or similar, so if someone has another or similar it would be a good idea to bring it. If anyone has tarps, ropes and pegs feel free to bring those along too as we may be able to make the shade bigger by joining things to make a make-shift annex type affair.
All else fails, and I'll have to sit in a spa/pool with the Silvia boys to keep cool![]()
I'll try bring enough Eski's, etc. to help keep drinks cool, but others should try do the same as there's only so much a TA22 can carry with 2 people on board.

Shade will be the major consideration, then a couple of chairs and maybe a esky to keep a few drinks cold, sunscreen and some food unless you want to pay big dollars for whats on sale there. A couple of rags and some cloth to give the car a quick tidy up after driving it down there.I will investigate on friday the cost of one of those portable shade things that will accomodate a car. Just for personal shade as you will bake in the sun without shade. maybe someone can contact Damo and at least we can get the OST banner? If not I dont think its any big deal with so feew cars represented I think about 5.
Its really only a matter of turning up and parking the cars and setting up an area where we can sit in some shade. i have a small collapsable table that i can bring if it fits in steves car with an esky.
