Plastic welding i would think would be the strongest method.
Otherwise Sikaflex![]()
it's most likely ABS plastic as stated above
also araldite FTW as stated above

The bar will have its material type stamped on it. a cheap soldering iron and some scrap bumper from another car will do the job.
I have plastic welded a few things before with a proper plastic welder and it came our real good.
What sorta damage is it?
It should have the material type moulded into it somewhere... I'm pretty sure the the material information has to be on it for recycling...?
Also, why don't you draw us a pic of exactly what the system needs to look like. After reading your posts I still don't have a clear view in my mind of what you are trying to do!...![]()
e.g. That doesn't really mean much to me! My idea of a lot of load might be way out compared to yours!Originally Posted by abently

Okay, now I've got a better idea of what I'm up against.
Just checked, no its not ABS.... its PP (Polypropylene).
merc-blue, what tip/method did you use with the soldering iron ? I tried that previously on some other part and it almost came up trumps, except I don't think I had the method down right to get the best result.
The load will be equivalent to somewhere around 50+kgs of force.

50kg+ of force on how long a bracket / lever?!
Why are you making trying to get information out of you like trying to get blood out of a stone?
Meh anyway...

You can plastic weld polypropylene, you just need to be sure that you've got PP rod (for almost all plastic welding the rod must be the same plastic as the things to be joined)
Probably would need to do a few runs of it though to take the load (depending on the load of course)

just roughen up the area around the bracket and the bracket itself. but that said, alloy bracket, and plastic weld don't sound like the best formula. i'd just FG it personally.

Also the bracket is steel and has given me a great idea, put it in the oven, just have to hold it in place afterwards otherwise it will burn right through the bumper.

i though tthe answer to that was obviousOriginally Posted by wilbo666
benty, a butt join to PP bumper is gonna have fuckall strength..
give up on gluing.
put a metal bracket on the back, the metal bracket on the front, bolt them together and stop being mysterious
if you do persist with gluing it, kick it when done.. if it comes off, it aint strong enough..
you planning to carry cement bags on the bumper?
are you sure the connections between bumper adn body can handle 50kg?![]()

I have used araldite on a bumper before and although it would be fine for gluing a reflector or something its pissweak if it is used to hold something structural. I reglued some protruding bits that have screws go into them and they could be fairly easily moved/broken off. The only way they would have held is if i had screwed them in from the other side but that wouldnt be astehically satisfactory.Originally Posted by trdee
Why not just buy a new/second hand bumper. I wouldnt say the effort you are going to is worth the time or effort when a second hand one could be had for probably under $100. Especially when whatever you do is likely to fail anyways - not because your a retard but just that i dont see any of the methods above being able to stand up to what it seems like your implying.

are you sure it is polypropylene? (the stuff used to make plastic bottles etc?) have you done a burn test?
if so "The best joining method is hot air or nitrogen welding"
edit, this isn't for ghey canards is it?

Forget glue. Nothing sticks to PP. It will fail if you try.
