any ideas?????
Howdi all im new the corona scene and dont know much about the engines or many engines as a matter of fact. I have an 18R with an auto trans on my RT104( i have many coronas) anyway to cut to the chase. When the engine is underload it is making a clicking sound. I changed the oil and fiddled around with my distributor, still no difference. It sounds like the rockers or tappets rattling, but really i have no idea. The sound is loudest when i was listening to the pulley that turns the fan so could it be the timing chain/belt(dont know which one my engine has) that is making this sound?
Has anyone else had this problem?
Any help would be great guys,
Cheers
any ideas?????
Could be anything... tappets, a big-end, timing chain, etc.
Setting tappet clearances is quite easy to do, so that might be the first thing to try.

I had the same problem in an RA40 was the timing chain death rattle. turned out being a chain tensioner had broken and was loose in the chain cover not pretty I just got a new timing chain kit cost me $80 came with chains tensioners and gaskits a couple of hours in the shed and was all sweet. you will be amazed how quiet it is now.

Top timing chain on the 18r are very prone to rattle. Usually the noise is quite in the morning when the oil is cold and thick and as the oil heats up it gets louder. Replace the chain, 18r and timing chain rattle go hand in hand.

I get a similar rattle when i run 91ron, I get it all the time, when i run 98ron i only get it under decent load, going up a hill etc.
Any cam noise isn't dependent on, or affected in any way, shape or form, by octane or load. It only cares about RPM and a little bit about overrun.Originally Posted by Dust
That's not 'cam noise', it's Detonation/pinging/spark knock.

Thanks, I was referring to the original post as his symptoms sound the same as mine.Originally Posted by allencr
That chain is gettin pretty bad now noise is really loud when car starts for the first 5 seconds, sounds like cam bearings or something my mate reckons. How hard are they to change? i havent ever worked on an 18R
They can be a bit of a pain in the ass to change, but nothing some swearing and extra time cant fix.
There is no reason why it cant be done at home with your avg set of tools.

I go for 'something', like chain, sprocket, tensioner & guides AND the tensioners oil supply about 99.99% of the time, and go for 'cam bearings' the other 0.01%.Originally Posted by StuRT104
