    Default 18R rattle

Howdi all im new the corona scene and dont know much about the engines or many engines as a matter of fact. I have an 18R with an auto trans on my RT104( i have many coronas) anyway to cut to the chase. When the engine is underload it is making a clicking sound. I changed the oil and fiddled around with my distributor, still no difference. It sounds like the rockers or tappets rattling, but really i have no idea. The sound is loudest when i was listening to the pulley that turns the fan so could it be the timing chain/belt(dont know which one my engine has) that is making this sound?

Has anyone else had this problem?

Any help would be great guys,
    Cheers

Could be anything... tappets, a big-end, timing chain, etc.

Setting tappet clearances is quite easy to do, so that might be the first thing to try.

Top timing chain on the 18r are very prone to rattle. Usually the noise is quite in the morning when the oil is cold and thick and as the oil heats up it gets louder. Replace the chain, 18r and timing chain rattle go hand in hand.

Any cam noise isn't dependent on, or affected in any way, shape or form, by octane or load. It only cares about RPM and a little bit about overrun.
    That's not 'cam noise', it's Detonation/pinging/spark knock.

Thanks, I was referring to the original post as his symptoms sound the same as mine.

They can be a bit of a pain in the ass to change, but nothing some swearing and extra time cant fix.
There is no reason why it cant be done at home with your avg set of tools.

I go for 'something', like chain, sprocket, tensioner & guides AND the tensioners oil supply about 99.99% of the time, and go for 'cam bearings' the other 0.01%.
